Well the good news from here is that it has cleared up and is sunny with a light NE blowing and TC looks good.
I presume that is where the lads are today :D

Temp. has been up to 19.2, now 18.2 deg.
Some dark and interesting-looking clouds to the SSE of here, probably to do with that blob of red and blue showing on rain radar near Rangitata River.
A slight to gentle southerly breeze - and here comes the rain and rapidly increasing wind from the south now!

Anyone seeing any hail?

This is a radar image plus vertical cross section. The line extending southwest from Ashburton marks the cross section.

Hoping this band wont move out to sea like it looks like it will. Its NE at ground level but clearly NW in the atmosphere as low puffy clouds are floating quickly west to east. :-# Fingers are crossed.

Would love to have access to better radar when we are chasing. Have seen one weak funnel, brief thin rope half way to the ground.

Metservice have got the high risk area right judging by the radar as its going to be a south of Banks Peninsular event.

cool
I know that the reports of the recent Auckland thunderstorms helped the severe forecasters too...and M/S did a good job that day keeping up with everything :)

the hail might have passed just to the south of ashburton?

Looking nice and dark to the south from here now, can see the nice big CB too :-)

Well the change has come through. Winds around to the SW with the associated temperature drop and darkening sky moving over. Sferics nothing much to write home about. Well that's it until the next possible thunderstorm event, when ever that happens :-s

Why on earth do the storms always go out south of Banks Peninsula all the bloody time now? They always used to come straight at chc from Ashburton way about a decade plus ago, then, something happened and they always do this sideways shuffle away from town. Does anyone have an idea why?
