Chased today from Geraldine back up to Christchurch when the storm hit the city about 6pm.
Saw lightning strikes here and there along the way, saw a brief rope funnel as we were going along but we weren't quick enough to get a photograph. Did see some hail but nothing overally big today, 5 to 10mm.
Things did look really good at certain points in time, saw a few areas of rotation. Still not an amazing chase but was still some fun. Here's a couple of pics.

Yes was a good chase today, atleast we saw something, but perhaps not as great as we hoped for.
I to have some photos but there about the same as Aarons, nice big rain band moving up but i dont think its going to do much now.

I took a short timelapse of the cloud buildup looking SW from near the intersection of Clintons and Bealey Rds. Unfortunately, I stopped just as it gets interesting

I actually think the Peninnsula acted as a development magnet over the city yesterday, because that general line with asociated thunder/hail activity actually moved off shore just SW of Lake Ellesmere before soon dying out.
The Southerly raced ahead of the shower line but with new development ahead of the line revamped up on land over Hornby the airport and slightly further east, a convergence would have helped this but also the topographical affect too.
It was a good chase day simular to last sunday just really hard to keep ahead of the line without so much rain to get good photos, which is why i would preferr isolated storms anyday like Septmeber 4th when you can sit on the outside of a cell and get good lightning photos.
Still early days yet though with December/January the height or best time for storms here.

Tell me about it, nothing annoys me more than chasing out of the City and end up with lots of strato stuff hiding it all when the development in town gets clearer views ... you feel like the storm chasing gods are against the "field guys" at times ...Jasestorm wrote:just really hard to keep ahead of the line without so much rain to get good photos, which is why i would preferr isolated storms anyday like Septmeber 4th when you can sit on the outside of a cell and get good lightning photos.

I thought we had the perfect set up here on tuesday with the storms generating on a slow moving convergence line rather than a cold front on the move, also southerly fronts tend to be a clear out of instability.just really hard to keep ahead of the line
