Re: General December Weather
Me Aaron and Mike did a quick chase last night up to Waikari but by that stage the cells had pushed east out into the bay, and a drier NW wind had kicked up.
It was very fast development yesterday on the radars those cells really push up fast, im wondering if its something to do with the valleys through there with those converging winds.
Looks to be a chance for slow moving thunderstorms on Sunday south of Christchurch and possibly another shot on Tuesday new years day too .
Its going to be very windy and wet for new years eve, warm though with it being NW.

Re: General December Weather
Good steady/heavy rain over the past 40 minutes or so, up to 5mm so far and it seems its from the city northwards somewhat stalled over us.
I would say the glen will be cancelled tonight, people south and inland from Christchurch will be thinking what rain? .

Re: General December Weather
Had a decent shower past through here about an hour ago, poured for a bit. However, have turned the irrigation on now to water the gardens and grass under overcast skies. The grass around the area is fairly brown. Looks like part of North Canterbury just north of the city really are getting some much needed rain. 1.5mm locally

Re: General December Weather
Oh and also it looks like a westerly flow is going to dominate from later this week which will potentially bring some quite warm temperatures to eastern areas again. The question will be how much cloud cover we get and whether the flow is more of a fresher westerly or more of a NW.

Photos of some thunderstorms that formed early this afternoon, in the N/NW part of Manawatu. These storms seemed to be moving in a S/SE direction, produced very heavy rain and a lot of inter-cloud lightning:

Re: General December Weather
Good weather here today.
Glad it stayed cloudy after the rain had finished as not to dry out the ground moisture.
Drizzly, but not not violent at the moment and it's only 14C

Net shots Gregg. We'll be away tramping up the north side of Mt Aspiring for the next week. Looks like we'll be using our raincoats quite a bit from the weekend onwards- but also some storm prospects for the area....looking forward to it, especially when sitting in the huts

Mostly dry this side of town David, very humid, dewpoint above 20C, currently 23C, cloudy to Overcaste, some sunny weather would be quite good now.

Re: General December Weather
A generally cloudy day here with the odd drizzle patches this morning.
Not overly warm but comfortable with a return to north-easterlies.
by the way, nice photos above from Greg

General December Weather
It looks like things are finally beginning to organize around here with a more defined line of showers developing along the west cost rather than the scattered light showers we have had all day. It's feeling very sticky right now.

Re: General December Weather
More cloudy murk today thanks to Cyclone Evan with all the moist air it brought down, the Auckland dewpoint on 20C again, a lot of this moisture should get pushed out early Monday 31st.

Re: General December Weather
Looking good for thunderstorms/hail in east Otago tomorrow (Sunday). Quite a cold intense upper level system crossing the South Island and at this stage looks like the onshore flow for convergence/thunder will be south of Oamaru. Dunedin looks to be a good spot.
Elsewhere over the country tomorrow, a front with humid air will be crossing the North Island but I think those upper level temperatures are still too warm tomorrow for much of a thunder risk.

Hit 29.5 here earlier, back to 28 now with overcast skies. Would be around 32 if the sun was out and it cleared up!
