Im abit baffled as to why on the MS thunder outlook theres no mention of hail with the storms over Otago/South Canterbury, tomorrow would be a perfect situation for decent sized hail down there.
There may even be one or two cells that get firing later on further north up to about Ashburton, even though its a dry westerly airflow the mix of the unstable air from the west coast and the correcting W-SW flow might be just enough.
But the key area is further south, might be worth a day trip

I agree with NZstorm, Oamaru and just south of there looks best. Perhaps up to Timaru around 6 or 7pm.

Around 10pm till midnight a chance exists out on Banks Peninsula too when the change flicks up there, so would be another case of sitting at Birdlings Flat maybe but we'll see. That's what I'll have to do anyway as work will get in the way of any storm chasing tomorrow till I'm free at 8pm.

Looks like an intense rainy spell for the South Island West Coast to the finish the year and start 2013. GFS is pushing out the numbers and no doubt thunderstorms to go with it.

Not sure how much rain fell but I would say at least 20mm possibly 30mm fell here in whangamata.

Our warmest day so far of summer, Howick reached 25.8°C during a very brief NW change at 2.40pm. Dewpoint peaked at 22.4°C - whew!

26.1*C with a 22.3*C DP so its getting uncomfortable.

Have some kind of convergence line running N-S just to my east that has some very nice looks to it.

Flucuation in temps here today. Hit 30 around lunchtime and then early afternoon we have increasing high cloud that brought behind it some spill over rain (0.5mm) and the temperature dropped to 18 degrees, however the wind stayed W to NW. We didnt receive the southerly here that snuck through the likes of Ashburton late morning. Now spells of sunshine have returned and back up to 24.

I was in Rolleston when the SW came thru'.
Nothing much in it eceprt for the rain that came across in a high to mid-range layer.
Felt quite humid.
Looked for something interesting in it but nothing really.
Back to NW now.

The NW wind kept up all night though had periods where it was light,back to mod to strong again this morning,i see even some fresh snow on the highest peaks.

Looks to be another strong upper level system crossing the country on the 2nd with storm chances over the east of the South Island. Maybe a chance of a squally frontal storm over the west of the North Island as well.

Looks to have been an about-average December here temperature wise, average min 15.0C and average max 23.0C. Little bit drier than normal with 68 mm rain.
