29.2 degrees here at the moment: it's only 22.6 indoors so I don't think I'll open any windows 0_o
Overcast and fresh to strong NW breeze.

Must be just a quick SW flick as it looks like the bulk of the action is to the south over South Canterbury/North Otago with some heavy showers maybe hail there this will be the main southerly much stronger etc.
So there might be something later peak season now anything is possible

I think the season was early this year, some years the spring pattern ( cold upper troughing) can run up to NewYear but we look to be very much in the Summer pattern now. Not to say there won't be some storm chances over Summer.
Can see some Cb /towering over west Waikato this evening.

Generally speaking for Canterbury December/January is the best time for storms as we see alot more thunder days ocurring and the severity of the storms is certainly up there too.
Going back to the 1998-2004 period there was days around xmas- new year of thunderstorms sometimes 2-3 days in a row, now days its more scattered occasions.
We can only hope for some decent set ups in the coming months.

Its gone gusty S-SW here the last half an hour with some CU forms shifting across from the west, some precipitation evident also in the clouds.
Interesting how the shower activity is moving west to east on the radars.

Agree Jason, December is usually peak month for storms along the South Island east of the Alps but December has been dead this year, October/Nov were unusually active hence my thinking the season was early.

26deg high here today which was lovely compared to yesterday, the SW wind change has just made it this far north with nothing in it but a cooler breeze, very poor forecasting from the MS today
A southerly change spreads north bringing rain, heavy at times and possibly thundery with hail inland. Rain easing tonight and southerlies dying out.

pm thunder possibilities for the central North Island today, looks largely south of Taupo.

Lifted index chart for 4pm. Note convergence of wind flows over the NI.

Looks like there is a low risk of storm for Waikato on Sunday and on Christmas Eve.
