850mb analysis/temperatures for xmas day. As a very rough rule of thumb you add 15C to the 850mb tempertaure to get the possible maximum temperature.

The low was a humid 20C here, we have missed the rain here so far.jamie wrote:Yep still like 22 with 90+% humidity at 11.30pm. Glad there is no work tomorrow.
As the flow turns more NE Ak will be more exposed to any precipitation. A rather humid week ahead but it looks like fresher weather will reach here by NewYear.

Though the blustery NE and cloudiness is likely to limit us to 25 here I think... wonder how high the dewpoint might get thoughNZstorm wrote:850mb analysis/temperatures for xmas day. As a very rough rule of thumb you add 15C to the 850mb tempertaure to get the possible maximum temperature.

Re: Ex-cyclone Evan near NZ, and Christmas Weather
I see Jamie is getting good heavy rain now
the boundary between the low and the NE flow around the high to the east is getting more and more organised into a frontal line
looking like good rain bands developing that will move into east cape/gisborne
this low has not finished yet..might turn into a good rain make yet due to the conveyor belt of warm humid NE winds it has been dragging in for a few days now, around the top of the high to the east

Odd bit of lightning activity coming from developing cell's just south of Rotorua just now. Good call by Metservice expanding the outlook.

About 5mm of mostly drizzle here since early morn.
I see the central Coromandel's Pinnacles recorded about 180mm over the last 24 hrs, and about 120 mm a little further south at Golden Cross.

I think there might be some Dec records broken in the west of the North Island today, with temps around 29-30C in Port Taharoa, Taumarunui, New Plymouth, Wanganui and Paraparaumu.

Re: Ex-cyclone Evan near NZ, and Christmas Weather
Thats some quite intense activity on the radars near Taranaki, do we not have anyone on here close to there?
It should be very humid here tomorrow with temperatures up around 27-29C depending on cloud cover, as there could also be some isolated showers too some heavy and thunderstorms more likly further north in the foothills i would think.

Yes, looks like a thunder risk for the lower North Island, upper South Island later tomorrow due to high temperatures and the moisture.
The forecast sounding for Palmerston North shows a trigger temperature of around 28C for cb development.

The humidity levels have been increasing in the last few hours with 74% in Culverden, but mines showing 64,the 19 deg temp ATM may not go a lot lower overnight.
This area is in the low risk of thunder storms zone Xmas day...and we have to be in CHCH, DAMM
