Looks like a front with a westerly change will be crossing the SI on the 31st with a ridge over northern NZ so rain/showers likely for the west and south of the SouthIsland moving through Otago afternoon /evening with cooler weather . Taranaki to Wellington will likely see some drizzle/possible late rain, gusty NW, dry else where over the NI.

If you are camping or glamping  in the south island over the new years period its going to be rough time keeping those tent pegs in, and the rocking of the caravan.
Gale force NWers likly through from Saturday to Wednesday, and heavy rain/ thunderstorms through the alps and on the west coast, im glad i am not camping this year but i am heading up to Hanmer on the 3rd for a few days.

Nice area i could live up there, perhaps future plans plenty to do up there and its just so much more relaxing enjoyable area.
If you dont know the area theres Kaiteriteri golden sands and the Abel Tasman national park great to walk, If you go over Takaka hill dont forget to visit Anatoki Salmon Farm best ever and you can catch your own too.
Far too many holidays there _b _b

Yes Kaiteriteri is an amazing place. I am up there every year from the 26th to the 10th and you would see blue dome skies with light winds at least 80% of the days. Boy does it pour when it says, as does Takaka. Last year we were hit by 220mm there in 36hours or so from memory with the heaviest rain I have seen in my life. Looking like periods of rain for the area for New Years Eve this year. Dry and mild out east here in Christchurch.
