Looks like there has been quite a bit of lightning in the north of the South Island.

Upper South Island is where the overlap between cool upper air and surface moisture occured.
Also the very high terrain there favours convection.
The upper air looked too warm over the North Island for thunderstorms but there was enough mid level CAPE for heavy showers. Good for the farmers.
There were showers through west Auckland today but Auckland central (Grey Lynn) was dry with 24C.

Must have just missed you guys as we got to Waiau as that storm moved off to the SE,got a photo of the next storm near Mt Lyford which must have been the one that was where Aaron and Steve were
Then on the way back we (youngest daughter)noticed another one SW of Hamner
So we drove west on a side road to get closer ,this storm was a real beauty with some close GS's
The same storm as it pasted Culverden

Re: Thunderstorms 28/12/2012
Cheers guys. Tried my best and that was the best one. The storms seemed to be generating along the same line, about 3 formed in total although the last one was fairly weak and didn't do much in the end.
Might've been interesting to sit north of Kaikoura on the coast and do some night time lightning photography as some storms moved offshore there.
