Re: General January Weather
I see that several forecasting systems are toying with the possibility of a tropical low greeting northern NZ later on this week into February.
With the blocking high still in the picture, only moving east slowly of the country, a tight pressure gradient will be created if the forecasts are correct.
The North may well experience gusty easterlies later on, with a chance of heavy rain.
Will have to keep an eye out
btw if your missing the Metservice NWP version of GFS (which is now replaced by the UKMO on Metservices site), Chris Noble has got this data on his website here: http://weather.noble.gen.nz/nz_model_tiles.php

Re: General January Weather
No Richard the water that makes up benmore comes a long way and from many places and has no direct river feeding it just lake tekapo, pukaki and ohau. Ohau is warm with large braded rivers feeding it and the canals feeding from pukaki are long and slow so warm up. Also very calm this time of year so little mixing of the surface water happens.

I was down in the central North Island at the weekend.

Re: General January Weather
Nice photo there NZstorm.
Humid conditions arrive in the north at the weekend, may get some patchy rain with it, it may stay dry.
We've had natures airconditioning system running here for the last few days with a cooling dry air northeaster.

They should be reached as the anticyclone is weakoning and moving further out to the east allowing the warmer air to move over us, by it's back-ridging and the developing low pressure systems to the north of the country and the low pressure systen delivering the rains to Queensland and NSW over there in OstrayliahCHCH Weather Chaser wrote: I see Metservice going for 29, 32 and 31 on Wed, Thurs, Fri. I think the down wind trail from it will be ash.

Re: General January Weather
Hey Steven, why do you think it would be ash? If so, it would technically be in eruption... which it isn't. Just curious. As far as I'm aware from what GNS has said, it's just steaming and degassing.NZstorm wrote: I think the down wind trail from it will be ash.

It will be gas. There is a persistent trail downwind from it that isn't water vapour, it must be gas.

Re: General January Weather
I see todays high for ChCh has been revised back to 22 after being 27 half an hour ago. The easterly clag is being quite stubborn today
EDIT: 24 degrees now (11.50am) with clearing cloud, although still only reporting 18 on metservice (presumably the airport)

Re: General January Weather
Yes, it looks as though it is not going to get that hot as what Jim Salinger told Morning Report on National radio, this morning.
