Wet NW Flow Over South Island for New Year
Thought I might start up a topic of this event as it looks as though there might be a considerable amount of rain falling on the western side of the South Island with this event with some spillage over to the eastern side.
MetService has predicted of up to 600mm of rain in some areas for their forecast periods.
That's a lot of rain so I hope that people especially campers and trampers in that region are prepared for this event.
If it was me I would stay at home or go tramping to somewhere where it is likely to be less wet like Banks Peninsula although your tent could be blown away in a severe NW gus t

MetService have upgraded their thunderstorm outlook to severe so there looks like a good chance of seeing "Wildfire" along the Southern Alps tomorrow after dark.
Could be 14347 strikes?

The trop is high over Westland, 12km which should help with the rain making. Should see cb tops to that height.
I notice Southland gets a lot of rain from this system and some decent rain in Otago as well.

Yes its a bit bizzare. Your right looks like nothing more than a brief period or rain really. Skies have cleared here now and its 23 degrees and climbing. Its gonna be HOT HOT HOT if the high cloud doesnt returnRichard wrote:What's the feelings about heavy thundery falls for Canterbury Wednesday which the MS are saying, then at the same time have nil rainfall for CHCH

You often find that when they have these ' a bob each way' forecasts, the rainfall rates are a better indercation of how the weather will turn out

You would be lucky with 3.. so far it was supposed to have bucketed down since Christmas Day.. we've had some overnight rain. Oh I do lie.. just before midnight last night there was some small hail with a 2 second squall.NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote:MetService have upgraded their thunderstorm outlook to severe so there looks like a good chance of seeing "Wildfire" along the Southern Alps tomorrow after dark.

Re: Wet NW Flow Over South Island for New Year
Staying at the caravan at the twizel end of benmore and the weather is nothing like they say, small spill over shower and strong winds just before but now sunny and a light nw 23C.
Looks grim up in the mountains tho so I hope we get a little electrical activity tonight like they say.
Only 30 mm since midnight up in Arthurs pass so no big rain there yet.

Re: Wet NW Flow Over South Island for New Year
Cloud cover could be an issue tomorrow but i wonder if that morning rain from the west will clear mid morning like it normally does to clearer skies, then the southerly comes up later with thunderstorms.
The chance is there and possibly even a high risk from mid Canterbury northwards due to the timing of the southerly, it will be a fast moving lot though typical roll cloud etc.
Well worth a chase for sure
It will be nice looking west tonight with the lightning, it seems to be getting organised now on the radars etc.

I feel late tonight and through tomorrow all the action is gonna happen. The systems looks at its most 'energetic' then.

Re: Wet NW Flow Over South Island for New Year
The NW did lessen during the afternoon but it is now back up in strenght.
I'm not too sure of the 'light-show' over the alps this evening now, also tomorrow's thunderstorm outlook dosen't look too promising, either but anyway, should get a good drop of rain tomorrow night as we need it here

Radar firing up now for Westland south of Hokitika and will push north over the next few hours. Very impressive to look at, very heavy stuff in that. Will be an interesting 24 hours ahead!

I don't know where you are getting the images from as MetService's rain radar network seems to be down at the moment.
