Wet NW Flow Over South Island for New Year

Unread post by BeaconHill »

I am finding that rain radar images are not showing on mobile version of MetService site. Full version of site they work ok, even via smart phone.

Raining steadily in Timaru where we are staying. Also managed to see some very distant flashes of lightning in the sky to the NW at about 1:30am. Very impressive.

Wet NW Flow Over South Island for New Year

Heaps of lightning over the alps at the moment. I don't think I've ever seen the 3 south island radars working so well together. Still heaps of rain to come.

I'm looking forward to strong winds in the lower north island. Heading there today.

Havn't seen the lightning tracker like that in a while. The first big lightning event over NZ since December 6th storms.

Hmm. "No images available" for rain radar for me #-o
but I can state without fear of contradiction that it is raining well, no breeze to speak of, the air has that delightful 'refreshing' smell one gets with nor'west rain, and there have been a few rumbles of thunder heard.

Flood warning this morning from Environment Canterbury:
Area: Kaikoura - Hinds
Additional Info: This was posted at 10am Wednesday the 2nd of January. Over 250mm of rainfall has fallen along the Alpine Divide and a similar amount is expected today. The heavy rain is currently in the headwaters of the Rakaia and Waimakariri rivers but will move north into the catchments of the Hurunui and Waiau rivers by early afternoon and out of this area this evening. As predicted yesterday those four rivers will be raging torrents today and tomorrow (further south the Waitaki and the Rangitata are also up). The outlook after that is for clearing weather

Its going to be interesting to see how those rivers cope over the next few hours. I see M/S ging for moderate risk thunderstorms tomorrow afternoon as well from Balclutha to Christchurch as they mention. It even mentions the chance of a small tornado. 26 at the airport now.

I just got that too some big drops alright, warm though on 25C and some weaker mix of CU clouds moving over from the west into blue sky.
Today will be touch and go for thunder but theres definatly a chance there, tomorrow looks better south of Christchurch too.

Where did you get that Temperature for Fairlie from??

I was on the phone to friends near Fairlie and apparently there was thunder and Lightning over the ranges with heavy rain last night and this morning, wish I was down there but I'm living up near Nelson for the next few months and have limited internet access so wont be able to visit this site as often.
