Re: Wet NW Flow Over South Island for New Year
Wasn't it a thunderstorm that somehow managed to survive the trip all the way to the plains? Is that what you meant by "overthrow"?

Re: Wet NW Flow Over South Island for New Year
It definately was nearby lightning. Here in hornby the two flashes I saw were bright and the thunder loud so the storm definately survived the trip over.

Rain getting heavier, and landing on the window from the southeast now as more cloud approaches from that direction.

Worth a read. Notice that heavy rain is moving into the region South of Hokitika again which will mean more run off potentially for the Rakaia. Arthurs Pass now also at 500mm for the event.

Re: Wet NW Flow Over South Island for New Year
Brief entertainment i love it, it seemed to spread out quite a way the lightning i seen its a bummer i didnt have the camera set up after i heard the first two rumbles.
This isnt even with a southerly which may not come through until about 11pm, still 18C with a breezy NW wind and 86% humidity so who knows for later on

20mm of welcome rain falling here and it is still coming down. Cold too and 6.8 degrees could even be some snow falling on the hills as well.

Re: Wet NW Flow Over South Island for New Year
Looks like the elevated lightning could make it to Taranaki but I can't see Auckland getting it.

5mm here. Looks like North Canterbury including Coastal North Canterbury are going to get some decent totals.

17mm here, with most of it since about 5.30pm. Some nearby lightning and thunder earlier. Heaviest rain seems to have eased now, but still falling steadily.

Vehicles currently trapped in the Buller Gorge between Inangahua Junction & Westport.. occupants safe but crews on both ends working flat out to get them out.
*ED* Due to slips.. which were always going to happen there tonight. Keep safe Brian & family.

Yes ,27mm and still heavy, its interesting how that the wind is moderate NE and the clouds are quickly moving from that direction,a low forming?CHCH Weather Chaser wrote:5mm here. Looks like North Canterbury including Coastal North Canterbury are going to get some decent totals.

Re: Wet NW Flow Over South Island for New Year
I see mentions of the Rakaia breaking it banks, still not such were exactly. Waimak still to peak.

Re: Wet NW Flow Over South Island for New Year
Just watched a turbulent mamatus cloud line roll over, never seen anything like that before had a roll cloud look to it with a wind shift to W-NW from N-NW.
Couldnt get a photo as its too dark now.
4.5mm from the rain earlier on, temperature now hovering around 15C rain just started again.

Re: Wet NW Flow Over South Island for New Year
Rain has returned at Oamaru after a reasonable fall between 4-9pm eased and now back with a vengence, Southerly strengthened too. First southerly chnage pressure did not rise but now is . Somebody suggested a low out there to the east . I think that is correct or at least a trough . 15mm since 4pm
