Re: Possible Storms South Island 3/1/13
I can see the Mayfield Storm from here. A cloud bank way deep into TC.
Nothing much happeneing here although there has been a persistent cloud overhead, probably the one that CWW photographed in a 'glaciated' stage, this afternoon.

Landspout funnel there. The low level laspe rates are about 8C so funnels were likely if showers developed. The convection is low topped.

Re: Possible Storms South Island 3/1/13
Must of been an isolated trough as conditions were rather weak for thunderstorm development here along the east coast despite the keen onshore easterly wind.Hordur wrote:There is a fairly sharp upper trough just moving across the east coast of the South Island as this is written. Some storms have been generated in Canterbury, as noted here with medium size hail. There have also been some lighting strikes in the vicinity of Dunedin. Once the trough moves away, which should happen soon, everything will die down.

Re: Possible Storms South Island 3/1/13
I couldn't get out of work early today (all other supervisors and store staff calling sick ... ) so only started the chase at 4:30pm. I didn't trust my car as it recently showed some signs of overheating when driving for a while and I didn't feel like going any further than the Rakaia ... well, too bad, staying between Dunsandel and Bankside I "only" was 50km from the action !
I still managed to see the big funnel near Westerfield (EDIT : the Mayfield tornado) as the sun did shine through the clouds for a little while. I couldn't tell what it was and shot a video with my compact but at such distance it's not worth anything in comparison with our chasers who got close to it.
I then thought "Bugger the car !" and crossed the Rakaia. I expected the cell to be inland shortly after that but I was deceived by the distances. Drove back towards the coast just north of Ashburton and quickly turned back as I have to get up at 5:30am tomorrow ...
Anyway I brought back a few shots of the northern side of the cell. Nothing exceptional but at least I didn't drive for nothing (and my car didn't die of overheating, duh !).
I have a few more than these 5 but it can definitely wait until later.

Re: Possible Storms South Island 3/1/13
Seems the storm down Oamaru way was more powerfull. We did our best though and watched the Mayfield tornado from start to finish. It never looked like a tornado as we saw no funnel to the ground but after seeing the reports and some pictures it does appear to be so. When I zoomed into one of my pictures I could also see a small debris swirl in the distance at the surface so that generally means a tornado I believe.
Here's a few pics.

Nice vid !
I would have thought the other lowered base you filmed at the very beginning would have produced something, but no it happened on each side of it.

Re: Possible Storms South Island 3/1/13
Excellent photos and clip.
Just goes to show marginal set ups can deliver something out of the ordinary.
The cold air over warm land has produced the landspout tornado.
The 700mb temperature was -9C which makes for a very steep lapse rate from the surface to the mid levels.
