I don't think so although it may have come close to being surface based.
There was a short wave trough that passed over, (now triggering lightning well to the east of Otago). This resulted in mid level cooling and I think the flow over the terrain triggered the odd cell - that is where there was ascent of the waves in the flow over the terrain.

At the summer racing circuit here all day in Greymouth.. (Omoto Races) and it was a bloody fabulous day. Pity you didn't hang around for it Brian, you would have had a ball if horsies are your thing. Seabreeze kicked up late in the afternoon but I'd say it didn't get past about 24ish the whole time.. fantastic day.. ask again tomorrow when the sunburn kicks in though haha.
Metservice going for 27 degrees here today, Cant see it getting quite that warm though with the onshore wind. Will be very warm inland though. Currently 23c.
That whole area was elevated convection,in this other photo i took last night looking to the NE with the seaward Kaikoura rangers bottom left,it gives you an idea just how high the base of the clouds are
Yes, very high based storms. Nice photo Richard.
I think the initial thunderstorm over the Malborough ranges was surface based and initiated by wind convergence and heating.
But any thunderstorm away from the ranges (Nelson City) would have to have been elevated. There was a weak short wave over the area late afternoon which would have provided lift.
Yes,that short wave extended way out into the Pacific too, that cloud above was part of a line of them extending from the main thunderstorm over the inland Marlborough ranges out to sea.
