Hot Weather for the South Island
Looks as though some hot weather courtesy of Australia should move across ther South Island on Saturday.
Even places like Invercargill should top 30C.
Interesting to see what and where the country's maximum will be

Re: Hot Weather for the South Island
I doubt it'll hit 30 at the airport - it's too affected by the breeze off the estuary. But in Invercargill itself? Possibly....especially if Christmas Day was anything to go by.
Now back to the high - 'officially' who knows but I'm sure there will be plenty of 'home' station fanatics that'll be trying to out do one another...

Re: Hot Weather for the South Island
Invercargill Aero has managed 30C+ on 5 occasions in the period 1949-2008, with a maximum in that period of 32.1C. As I pointed out in a post a long time back, the annual mean there is only about 0.6C lower than at a former urban site.

Re: Hot Weather for the South Island
Good evening RWood - I can always count on you making a comment when it comes to Invercargilll.
It would be interesting to know what the annual means stats are for other places with two sites to take their daily high from, ie, airport/city or town such as Oamaru, Kaikoura, Wanganui, Wellington etc
Was that former site inside a building on a reserve at the corner of Queens Drive and Yarrow St?

Re: Hot Weather for the South Island
I used to know where it was, but can't remember now. Would have to look up some archives - not sure if CliFlo has the info. in its notes. Just checking CliFlo - not clear as there are several town sites and some have no location description added. Older ones mention Lennie Nursery, Janet St and Baird St but then there is a blank for later sites.Flutterbye wrote:Good evening RWood - I can always count on you making a comment when it comes to Invercargilll.

Re airport vs town, Ch'ch has the same difference as Invercargill - 0.6C (overall mean).

Re: Hot Weather for the South Island
The temp is on 3.5deg which is as low as it got over night, looks as though the wind flow will be light this far up the island so there wont be much in the way of a cooling breeze its going to fry

Re: Hot Weather for the South Island
I think 35C could be achieved in a number of places today.
Tomorrow should see more heat over the upper SI and lower/western North Island
GFS also picking isolated heat thunderstorms over the ranges of the South Island on Sunday. There is a weak shortwave crossing.

Re: Hot Weather for the South Island
19 degrees atm with a northeast blowing. I don't see it getting past 24 or 25 here today with the nw kicking in late this evening. Warm night ahead though and warm morning tomorrow but looks like winds will change light southerly late morning so that prob limits the temp tomorrow too. Central otago looks to swelter today.

Any of the inland valleys really.CHCH Weather Chaser wrote: Central otago looks to swelter today.
Its days like these where temps in some remote micro-climates would exceed the NZ record yearly i believe ,ive heard of one location from a number of musters who have worked in this area and they reckon its the hottest place they've had to work in.Its up the Clarence river in behind the Seaward Kaikoura rangers to the east and the Inland Kaikoura's to the wast, the Seaward's stop any of the sea breezes from reaching the valley.

Jordan would be a fair representative, and it reached 42.3C on 7/2/1973 though the equipment hadn't been monitored for some time. It had 100.7F during February 1967.Richard wrote:Any of the inland valleys really.CHCH Weather Chaser wrote: Central otago looks to swelter today.
