3 day rain forecast on metservice shows alot of rain falling over night tonight on the Divide. Rakaia and Waimak are going to be as high as they where back on the 2nd and 3rd Jan, maybe even higher!

Nice stuff Brian! Getting very gusty here in chch. May head inland to check things out if the lightning gets active later tonight.

Re: More Rain for the West Coast on Wednesday 9th January
Nothing much showing here looking westwards at the moment but judging by that lightning indicator, there might be a few sparks to look forward to tonight when it's dark as that front moves up the SI.
I hope so
Looks wet in Southland rather than up along the Alps at the moment?

See MetS have a low risk of elevated thunderstorms extending across the Main Divide out to coastal Nth Canterbury in the morning03Stormchaser wrote:Nice stuff Brian! Getting very gusty here in chch. May head inland to check things out if the lightning gets active later tonight.

Re: More Rain for the West Coast on Wednesday 9th January
Next to nothing up here all day.. light rain more than anything, not even really enough to put a jacket on for. That might change later this evening though as it usually does. The wind has been roaring since mid morning however.. it's pretty rough out there now already, just hope the guys at the NZ Stockcar titles racing currently in Greymouth aren't getting blown all over the track!

Re: More Rain for the West Coast on Wednesday 9th January
Another concern is when that band comes up the island overnight possibly between 5-8am there could be some big wind gusts even out east in the city gusting just over 100kmh, the MS have noted in the warnings for potential gusts to 150kmh about some inland areas.
So a burst of gales in the AM hours followed by brief rain maybe a clap of thunder or two from elevated lightning, should be good looking west overnight.
The haze was very evident in the skies this morning from the aussie bushfires.

Re: More Rain for the West Coast on Wednesday 9th January
Not much wind here in the lumsden area, which
Gets the NW winds,at the moment....was stronger around
4pm
Edit:
I see from isobar land,we have a small low right
Over us.....no wonder we got a good thunderstorm here
(Cloud to ground strikes were like only a km away from us,cool stuff it was)

Frequent lightning flaring over the skyline to the west.
A few spots of rain, being blown from who-knows-where in the strong westerly breeze;
22.1 degrees, starry sky.

At a friend's place on the Cashmere hills, can see frequent lightning out west, every 2-3 seconds.

25.7 degrees at the airport with 80 kmph gusts but lots of suburbs getting no wind including here in Riccarton.
Lightning now less frequent over the mountains.
