More Rain for the West Coast on Wednesday 9th January

Unread post by NZ Thunderstorm Soc »

Looks as though there may be more rain for the Western areas of the South Island with some spillover for eastern areas and also strong NW winds as well.

Yes,its an amazing sight to see,i saw Benmore spilling years ago.

I would imagine it wont take much to bring the river up again as they are still high from the last event.

Elevated thunderstorms along the warm front but they look to be weakening.

Looks likely there will be elevated thunder developing over the Alps tomorrow due to divergence from the jet stream as well as the saturated airmass.

The waterlogged catchments are going to react more drastically this week if the 300-400mm forecast eventuates. Thats round the Canty and otago rivers should be on alert as well.

28 degrees of warm NW sunshine here, and rising steadily. I imagine some cloud cover will be due this arvo to put a cap on the temps

It took 158h to get the 533mm they had in arthurs pass in the last storm cycle but this time they think 400mm but in 25h so much more intense rain could lead to many more problems.
Went to kumara to check on the batch on sunday and I don't think that road or rail line can take to much more with many washouts on both road and rail and creeks so full of shingle that you can touch the water from the bridge 8-o

Light to moderate rain for the last 30min. A close eye on the lakes and rivers will be necessary in the next day or two. Just heard some thunder rolling around the ranges to the north of here. Temp 20 degrees
