Storm Chasing in a Drought

Unread post by NZ Thunderstorm Soc »

I nearly went on a storm chase today when I learnt of a southerly change coming through Canterbury this afternoon.
As there has been a lack of rain, thunderstorms, whatever, over this summer period, a chance of any dry southerly change coming through may have something to chase.
Checking the Rakaia Radar, there was hints of a few spits of drizzle appearing around the Chertsey area, north of Ashburton. Should I go and chase, this drizzle, because it could be an opportunity of other drizzle forming north?
The cloud came in and delivered ...nothing,so darn, I wished I went out there to Chertsey to record the drizzle. :( :(

Noticed a lot of pine needles making their presence, especially after yesterday's southerly change, around the place and in the horse troughs. We have pine trees to the back of our place.
The dryness situation at the moment shows mature pine trees shedding their needles

In arthurs pass (4mm of rain since beginning Feb) the beech forest is turning yellow and the undergrowth is starting to suffer and die.

Now thats a drought and a half for the alps...remarkable.

Yes, that's pretty impressive. In Feb 1973 some parts of the NI were pretty low - some sites on Mt Taranaki had 1% of their average rain (4mm out of 460+ average).
