Rain and thunderstorms for St. Patricks Day

Unread post by NZ Thunderstorm Soc »

Looks like the first significant rain for ages is likely to hit the West Coast which is possibly the most "Irish" place in NZ, which ancestory records go as for settlement, mainly because of the rain, gold and the greeness of their homeland.
I am from Irish extraction, well from the French side of Irishdom. Gaul meaning into gaelic, the foreigner, with family connections from Wexford.
With the lack of rain over there as of late , which is uncommom for the West Coast, I hope that the St. Patrick's day rainfall will become of use to them and also for other parts of the country in which the rain may fall.

Ha  your a character John i almost had to squint at first to see the green, yes i was hoping someone would create a topic for Ex TC Sandra also known as the Lass who teased the drought prone kiwi soils ;P .
By that i mean its a pitty now its just one low instead of the double scenerio it has been playing out on the models for much of the week, still 20-30mm possible here with maybe a clap or two of thunder later tomorrow when the southerly arrives.
You can see the impact the system has on the flow further south, because even though another high shifts in on Wednesday the NW/SW flow comes in on the weekend and it looks set to become strong even after that which is what we really need.
Im just hoping the fronts are juicy enough to shunt up over the west of the North Island where its needed most.
Ohh and if you see a man in a car wash on his bike, hes possibly irish

I tried to get the topic title in green but it didn't work. Can you help me on this Will?
Yes, I think for this St. Patricks day event, there should be a bit of rain for the country, not enough to green the areas that need the rain but any moisture that comes from the sky should help.

The warm front looks to have activated a bit with elevated convection. There was a couple of lightning strikes early morn just west of the NI but that looks to be it for lightning.

horray
moderate rain here now
hopefully will get 10mm before it moves over
will be good for water tanks and kukuyu/paspalam (tropical grass)
but need 50mm now and then another 50mm in a weeks time to be a drought breaker

Patchy light rain falling here so far this morning 1.2mm and a mild 18C, the rain seems to be confined from the city northwards at the moment but that will change as the day goes.
Edit. Now its steady rain

Staying at the caravan at lake benmore this weekend, twizel and the Mackenzie country getting a good soaking this morning with it pooring down for the last few hours.
I see tho that the west coast is getting very little rain at all with the highest recorded being 19mm, mt cook has had nothing as has arthurs pass.
At a guess for here so far maybe 10-12mm with it falling at around 4-5mm/h but with out a gauge its hard to tell but there are many puddles now tho.

7mm here. Very nice to be standing in. Roads are very very greasy and there is detergenty bubbles on the road. I was witness to a collision on the road just after the rain started and had to stand in the rain talking to people but i didnt mind one bit. I think standing in the rain was lifting my spirits a bit.

About the same here, just looked in the rain-gauge: it wasn't dry but that was all one could say.
Rejoicing with the folks who are enjoying the rain they're getting, though \:D/

Around 10mm here today and it has fallen slowly which is much better than a short sharp heavy shower which produces a lot of runoff. Humid 20C dewpoint here and brighter now.

Sun has made an appearance here in the last half hour bumping the temperature up to 23C, just remained very light spotty rain throughout the day just the brief steady fall earlier.
But its closing in now going by the radars light rain falling through much of the region now which will increase in the coming hours, heres hoping for some decent falls.
