as long as it helps with day to day forecasting and for extreme weather events developing
and if this new resource could tap into the observations from observers in the auckland area as well
(i.e sort of like storm spotting in a way)

Wow regional forecasters and even the idea of observations from local observers, sounds like were going full circle here(like what we had 50years ago).
But yes I think its a bloody good idea too, just a thought tho could it be to help compete with the very Auckland based Weather watch team

Yes it is good for them to branch out, so they can get a more local perspective rather than looking at a radar and web cams to see whats going on in other places.
Ideally they should have an office in each main center and each of those local offices are responsible for forecasting in there own governing area.

Yes, that's what I mean. Start out in Auckland and then in years to come to other centres from the Auckland experience.
Not only in areas of population but areas where influential weather takes place.ie. western areas,Northland or SE of the South Island.

I would say the forecasting will stay in Wellington. I think it will just be a move to grab better media attention in the future.

maybe to replace the retired Bob McDavitt in some way?
(i.e as a media contact in Auckland sort of thing and maybe provide some local forecasting input? (that is the real crux there)))

As a kid I remember visiting the old Auckland Metservice office on Ponsonby Road around 1987!

Hi igaquo1, yes there has already been discussions about this in the General April Weather thread. However, a separate thread is probably not a bad idea, so I've moved those posts here to your thread.

Hopefully it'll lead to better forecasting for severe weather events like tornadoes in Auckland.
