Re: General May Weather
seems GFS may have overestimated the rainfall here... can't really see another 25mm coming tonight looking at the radar

General May Weather
Just got woken by what I gather is the cold front. Heavy rain and strong wind.
Had 36mm so far. All the rest will come from showers but could end up close to 50mm from event easily.

Re: General May Weather
500mb chart for midnight Monday. Looks like a decent thunder risk late Monday but more particularly early Tuesday over the west of the North Island. Could be a fair bit of lightning initially before the drier air arrives and we end up with just weaker squally hail showers for the rest of Tuesday. A nice winter event.

Re: General May Weather
17C here just after midnight - about 1C warmer than yesterday's day-temp.
Only managed a total of only 8.5mm here. Windy though. I'd say Whangaparaoa's N'ly gusts to 78 km/h yesterday evening were probably akin to what it was here - quite pleasant now though.

Re: General May Weather
Just got back from Hanmer where a fresh NW was with us most of the time with gale force gusts at times. The drive home wasn't the smoothest with the wind. Got back to CHCH about 30mins ago and it was dead still but the NW has come up just recently here now too. Currently a very mild 19 degrees.

Re: General May Weather
Hanmer is quite often windier than here with these winds. Highest average wind speed here was 49km/h and our highest gust was 69.9km/h so still a bit to claim gale force here. currently sitting on 15.8 degrees

Re: General May Weather
Mild here, partly cloudy ,18C with a dewpoint of 15C.
The cold air is starting to show up in the south, Invercargill currently on 5C. The incoming snow is perfect timing for the skii fields.
Tuesday looks like a day for hail here, expect most showers will have hail. Possible thunder more likely in the morning hours.

Yeah last night for a period of time it was over a sustained period.trickytiger wrote:Hanmer is quite often windier than here with these winds. Highest average wind speed here was 49km/h and our highest gust was 69.9km/h so still a bit to claim gale force here. currently sitting on 15.8 degrees
Yes, its funny, a lot of the time you could hear the huge roars from the gusts and then you look out the window and the trees are dead still. It just comes in short sharp waves a lot of the time.Richard wrote:Yes that wind up this way Leighton has been coming and going since yesterday, calm ATM with a spits of rain.

Re: General May Weather
Wow - is that your record wettest month? I'm only on 188mm here, which isn't that amazing. Might just make it to 200 by month's end.Manukau heads obs wrote:240mm for may so far...

Re: General May Weather
NIWA's Akld, Mangere site, with 239.2mm so far this month, has already easily beaten its previous May record of 197.5mm in 1962.
I think Akld Aero still needs about 5.5mm to beat its 2004 record of 216.8mm though.

WOW! Just went outside and saw the moon. Just about fell over. Golden full moon on the horizon just above a tree and glowing with the cool damp air. Absolutely stunning!

Re: General May Weather
Lovely moons alright.
Was in Avondale last night and saw the moon rise up over the sea at New Brighton and then this morning saw it slowly sinking in the west over the Alps, and this evening a nice rise, viewed from hair in West Melton
A sight to be "Over the Moon With". ...

Re: General May Weather
I see the Southern Annular Mode has trended into a more negative phase which suggests a more active westerly type pattern in the short term.
