We like stormy  my preference is for warm stormy.

There is a strong cold system in the models for the end of week/early next week, see how this looks in the modelling over the coming days.

Should see thunderstorm development in the Tasman over the next 2-3 days as a trough develops out there. There looks to be a thunder risk for the west of the North Island late Thursday into Friday. Will need to see how the gfs shapes up.

There looks to be a thunder risk for the upper North Island Friday into Saturday. The polar trough on Sunday is something to watch for the eastern South Island for possible thunder.

Yes and what comes up on the windchange after dark on Saturday night too, i think the air will be cold enough with some good instability combined with mild temperatues because of the present NWer and warm sea temps as well will help to get some beaut storms going.
Will reach Timaru by 7pm and Christchurch about midnight with thunder and hail, it can happen after dark at this time of the year just gotta have those key ingrediants which we do have.
Will be a great chase night time show, Sunday will be a very wintry typical CB day with heavy hail showers and some thunder occasionally i am thinking.

Some beefy showers on the trough heading westwards. Looks like eastern areas such as Auckland and Tauranga could get hit with them later on tonight.

No celebrating here if that occurs. q-

We had a dullish April as a letdown from the great start to the year - I want a return to better conditions. This forum seems to be dominated by those who like "exciting" weather - as if NZ doesn't see enough or cloud and/or rain already for much of the time.

Only 4mm overnight here in Nelson. I see there's no wind at the airport, yet here less than 10km away its a fresh NE with gusts around 50-55km.

but of course
normally people are interested in the weather for exactly that
not for how many hours of sunshine there is

I like May weather for the stormy thunderstorms and lightning May brings.

"Of course"? What you mean is that the forum is dominated by a particular type of interest. If you look at something like UKWW (admittedly much larger) there is far more emphasis on climate (as opposed to just weather), anomalies, etc - not just a succession of particular events. The weather is generally looked at in broader terms on UKWW. Nothing wrong with this forum per se, I'm just pointing out the narrowness of focus.

Heavy snow falling accross Lindis Pass when I came though last night. Was settling down to around 600m too. Driving was marginal to say the least.
