More horizontal TRIZZLE here over the last hour but I see further development on the radar to the south.

Seems everywhere is getting lots of rain but here,had no rain since 6.00

Looks like coastal South Canterbury is missing out on most the rain for this system, As according to Metservice there is been no rain in Timaru today and only 0.8mm yesterday.

Colder air up here in Nelson now with 11.8 degrees currently at my place, 24mm for the event so far.

Must be only in the cloud as Blitzortung only shows CG strikes as I believe?

Correct, its very similar to the private Metservice Lightning network which only detect CG's.
It may be possible in future to detect IC and CC forms of lightning.

What i find interesting about how this system has affected my area in the fact that its been blowing a WSW wind which is nearly diagonal to the general SSE blowing over much of the east coast of the South Island,what's made it blow from that direction really puzzles me and when it does come from there we always miss out on getting much rain like we just have.

Getting abit of sheltering here by the looks just really strong southerly winds at the moment, only just over 10.2mm so far but there will be a shift in rain bulk as it moves north and the isobars swing S-SW.

44mm here now and steady light rain falling. Some heavier falls on radar just south of here at the moment.

Blowing SW in Rangiora to Richard not the SE it was when I went to Chch, only 14 mm in my gauge which is fine by me as who wants muddy lawns and garden now when its to cold to grow.

Interesting melja how some areas have missed out while others have has truck loads,talking to a bloke 3 kms from here and he's had 16mm,10 more than here

A lot of local variance around CHCH city too. Seems anything from 20 to nearly 50mm. Looking at the radar some sheltering to the far east of CHCH.

Quite often when we get a cold SE to southerly system, the wind seems to come in from the west to SW here as well but we still get the rain here. The snow events we've had since we've been here, the snow has come in from the west or SW, up against the house. The 2011 snow events, the snow built up against the garage door, which faces west, hence we couldn't get out.
Overnight and this morning there was a strong West to SW wind blowing.
Movement from the radar showed a more southerly direction. Just like yesterday, when despite the SW blowing over us, the rain was moving south according to the radar.
52mm since it came onto rain last night so far.

46mm for the event, probably be stretching it to make 50mm now - just drizzle/light rain this afternoon with the occassional more moderate fall.

However, just in the last 5 minutes we have a very heavy downpoor, radar shows it in a line. Maybe we might get to 50mm yet.

There are actually some beefy looking showers come up, should easily hit 50mm i would say

50.5mm was recorded in my rain gauge at St John of God Halswell to 1:30pm today for this event.
EDIT: Another 7.1mm, so it brings the total up to 57.6mm for this event.

Thats good going. Over 50mm doesnt happen often. Just hit the magic figure here now from a heavy shower. Also cracked 200mm for the YTD.

Amazing variance around the CHCH area. 11.9mm for Powermad (what suburb?) and 72mm for you Ferngrower (welcome by the way). Looks like a few showers overnight before clearing. 52mm here so a quarter of the rainfall to the YTD.

Yes i have noticed that myself it will be really chilly for Invercargil on thursday if it doesnt change.
