Re: Possible Polar Blast coming this weekend 4th to 7th May
Can the southern skii fields get some useable snow from this system ?, it is still early in the month but there is more cold air in the modelling this week.

I thought the model change Wends through to Thurs was very unusual.Deano wrote: Hardly a polar blast anymore!

Metservice forecast for snow levels back up to 800 metres.I thought 400 metres was a bit extreme looking at the models.Hard to see snow falling below 1000 metres here in Canterbury over the next 36 hours.

Nice sunny Saturday in Wellington, mild and just some high cloud from mid-afternoon. Lovely start to Sunday - sunny, little wind. Must get a good walk in before the later deterioration.

Re: Possible Polar Blast coming this weekend 4th to 7th May
Metservice site this morning only showing around 6-7mm forecast like u said last night now Richard. Not sure how thats come about as there 3 day maps are GFS based to my knowledge and usually line up relatively well to the GFS output (as youd expect). GFS run this morning was showing 43mm for Christchurch so not quite sure why there 3 day maps dont at least compare somewhat similar. If the metservice one is anything to go by then they are implying nothing more than occassional drizzle/light rain for here.

Well, that'll impress Chch residents with the flooding that could occur after 43mm rain.. particularly in the sunken areas if MS are wrong.

Much cooler now than this morning when it was quite pleasant.
No sign of rain here. Imagery showing all rain moving south despite the cool surface wind from the SW.

Radar showing drizzle in inland Canterbury and South Canterbury building now. Will no doubt turn into more general rain over the next couple of hours. Perhaps some drizzle developing in CHCH before midnight.

10.0 degrees at present but it sounds much colder, with strong to high wind driving that drizzle and rain lashing against the windows.

Re: Possible Polar Blast coming this weekend 4th to 7th May
We lit the AGA today, with the anticipation of the colder weather eventuating from this system introducing us to winter. I can see it coming onto rain, maybe later tonight, but possibly from early tomorrow.
The main feature will be the incoming anticyclone, cradling the trough, turning it into an 'old man' southerly scenario, which should be the main feature for the rest of the week, hence the cold wind will be the main feature

A bit of drizzle here, now. This system needs to shift, as according to the radar, any rain forming, seems to be moving away to the west, like was it was earlier.

Re: Possible Polar Blast coming this weekend 4th to 7th May
Still dry here but i see some depth in some of the showers coming through now, hints of red in isolated showers maybe hail hence the shift to a low risk of thunderstorms tonight down here.
If you look further out to sea off Kaikoura you can see the showers sneaking into veiw now which will be lining up the rest of Canterbury in a SE flow first then southerly overnight.

I see that the Invercargill radar is now pointing showers moving from the SE. This should more influence the rain here later, overnight, as the system moves to the east.

Re: Possible Polar Blast coming this weekend 4th to 7th May
The wind here has tended more southeast than true southerly since it turned earlier today, with the result that rain has blown in over the porch area and the firewood...
Rain still pelting down.
9.0 degrees now, 997hPa.

Nice day on the west coast today with sun from lunch and warm to on 19C, no wind at all.
Bit of rain coming home over Arthurs pass and porters but very warm on 12C so no snow.
W/W on there site were telling of a grim day on the west coast and snow set to fall on arthurs pass
