Thunder possible Northland/north Auckland May 8th to 9th
The upper trough has brewed up some convection out over the sea just the west of the North Island.
A frontal band will move onto Northland this morning and drift slowly south to reach north Auckland this evening according to gfs. Dewpoints this morning across Northland are around 14C which is supportive for at least isolated thunderstorms given 500mb temps -23C. CAPE 400j/kg. As the front is slow moving some eastern parts of Northland could get a decent amount of rain.

Hard to tell how much rain is coming our way, but I am just within the limits of the Metservice moderate risk area tomorrow

I'm surprised how quickly the rain is coming toward Auckland this morning, faster than any models had been indicating.
Skies looking dark to the north.

Darkening skies to our north here. Wasnt expecting the rain to be this far south so early. Its really building fast too from what the radar is showing.
You're in the fireing line tomorrow by the looks david. I wouldnt say your on the edge. Looks juicy indeed with the hail size.
The northland radar is supposed to be opperational around July with site works due to commence around June once final approvals have been provided. Thismorning would have been a good day to have it up and running.

I see Ricky's weather station rain gauge not working.
There is a new weather station online in Kingsland now.

Yes, just had a look and there was a large bird poo right down the middle! measured out about another 3mm accumulated in the funnel..NZstorm wrote:I see Ricky's weather station rain gauge not working.
All good again now, updates the figures.
Make that an extra 10mm just calculated it...

MetService's severe thunderstorm watch now extended to include North Auckland this evening. Very wet and gloomy here in Takapuna.

Re: Thunder possible Northland/north Auckland May 8th to 9th
Really that's quite a significant reading - I'm south of Kerikeri in Whangarei and weve only had moderate to light steady rainfall over a 3 hr period since midday today.CHCH Weather Chaser wrote:Kerikeri metservice site got 120mm from earlier today. 74mm of that in 2 hours.
There has been a couple of heavy downpour's that lasted for a min or two at the most. I thought nortland (Whangarei) would be clear of all the heavy stuff and Auckland was going to get all the rain.
Takecare.

Cb's have been developing over Northland today, they can bring localised very heavy rainfall. The radar shows more developing now inland from the Bay of IslandsDTNZ wrote:Really that's quite a significant reading - I'm south of Kerikeri in Whangarei and weve only had moderate to light steady rainfall over a 3 hr period since midday today.CHCH Weather Chaser wrote:Kerikeri metservice site got 120mm from earlier today. 74mm of that in 2 hours.

It's been interesting watching the rain area shrinking in on itself on the radar, a few hours ago I assumed it was going to rain most of the night. Up to 31mm, easing off here now.

00Z gfs not showing too much precip for us overnight.
We will have to see what can develop tomorrow before the system shifts away.
