Dunedin is usually the cloudiest main centre but R Wood would be the person to contact with regards to that. :smile:

It would make more sense just to look at the annual sunshine averages for these centres, for comparison purposes. No universal definition exists for "cloudy" or "overcast", but NIWA's CLiFlo has records for monthly totals and partial (generally 1972 onwards at present) records for daily totals. As it happens I have all the daily data for Kelburn from 1954 (records go back to 1928 though) so could compute, as a rough suggestion, the average number of days per year with say 10% or less of the possible sunshine (absolute values make little sense given seasonal variations in day length), if you think this is really useful.

Annual averages 1981-2010 (hours):

Auckland (Mangere) 2038 (*) {North/central Auckland about 2100-2130 from earlier time periods, not current}
Wellington, Kelburn 2110
Christchurch Aero 2141
Dunedin, Musselburgh 1681

Nelson Aero 2472 Cromwell 2195
