Its not getting low enough the temperature and given the temps up north as Jamie said it is surprising the temp isn't down more around the 1 degree mark when these showers come through.

Think the cold has been cut of now with that high pushing in, you can see its picking up the air mass from under Australia for a while now.
Coldest air went up the west coast yesterday in the sw flow and onto the North island today and that's why they have got colder temps than us in parts up there.
Coldest temps for here in Rangiora were last night in that brief storm, didn't go below 5C here all day on my station today and not one drop of moisture fell.

I think you will find its the oppisite with the high situation so i have to disagree there, the high actually drags up the cold air and more so on the back side of such a system.
Temperature is dropping here 3.4C now with a mix of rain and sometimes grapel, some big gusts again too.
If the temperature keeps dropping there will be snow flurries for sure, so i wouldnt rule anything out.

I think we go through this every year don't we :-k
By now I would think people would have caught on to the fact that around these parts we rarely get well settling snow in these types of SW events and just watching the news now shows its fallen in all the normal places in this type of setup.

Two maps (thanks to metservice) one 6pm last night show the cold air being dragged straight up from well south, the second show this connection well gone and as Deno says well to the east and the much warmer air being feed in from under Australia.

The pool of very cold air over Canterbury starts to move out after midnight, night time cooling and cooling under stronger Cb clouds can bring snow levels down

Just back from another drive up the port hills up near the places to the left just before you continue into Victoria Park. 2cm on the ground there and was snowing good. In between showers not but it seems it will be a port hills event, they may get another couple of cm before the system is out.

Snowed for about 5-8 minutes here before, very wet type snow but enough to form an ice sediment on the cars.
Down to 1.6C now brrr bring on the next shower, they sure are getting beafy now as the maps depicted heavy hail and a clap of thunder reported over the hill at Akaroa about 30 minutes ago.
