A couple of brief small hail showers reported at SW Waiheke's Kennedy Point about an hour or two ago; nothing here at the NW end though.
Here's today's latest outlook (spelling-warts and all - lol )
Here's today's latest outlook (spelling-warts and all - lol )
MetService - Severe Thunderstorm Outlook
Valid to: Midnight Tuesday 28 May 2013
Issued at: 10:37am Tuesday 28 May 2013
Deep instability and a strongly distubed southwest flow are expected to affect New Zealand during today. There is a high risk of squally thunderstorms bringing heavy showers and hail to Northland, Auckland and the Coromandel Peninsula.Additionally, damaging wind gusts of 120 km/h and even stronger are possible with squalls and a Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued with respect to this. This evening or tonight, the situation in these northern regions should begin to ease. About Waikato there is a moderate risk of thunderstorms this morning.
For Wellington and Wairarapa and also the central North Island regions of south Taranaki, Wanganui and Taihape, although the risk of thunderstorms is at most moderate, there is however a greater risk of large acumulations of small hail at times throughout the day, particularly from late this afternoon. Also about Wellington and Wairarapa southerlies are expected to strengthen towards evening bringing squally wind of 90-110 km/h.
From late afternoon, the risk of thunderstorms about Mahia and coastal Gisborne increases to moderate, and there is a risk of heavy showers bringing hail and strong wind gusts of 90-100 km/h.
Elsewhere over the North Island and in the east of the South Island from Banks Peninsula northwards, there is low risk of heavy wintery showers during today. While for Southland there is a low risk of thunderstorms and small hail this morning.

Just talked to a farmer in Pirongia and he said once the last shower to come thru cleared he could see snow on the top of Mt Pirongia. Pirongia mtn reached 959m. Im not sure how far down the mountian it was but i would geuss it would be snowing down to 800m at least to be able to see the snow up there.

Cool photo spwill.
Nice little 5mm hail-shower just now - briefly looked like it had been snowing on the deck.

The lightning photo was taken by manually opening shutter for 1.6 sec intervals so you need some luck to catch a strike.

Re: Thunder, hail and gales for parts of the North Island 28 May
Have had some heavy hail showers here in Glenfield. Temp had made it up to around 10.4 degrees about an hour ago but now back to 8.3 and it appears to still be dropping. Still hearing thunder, which has been coming and going since I woke up around 8am.

5.2 Degrees and rain at home. Much like the day us northerners had snow in 2011.

Re: Thunder, hail and gales for parts of the North Island 28 May
You read my mind, Jamie. I was thinking on my way in to work at midday that if this system had come through in July, it would definitely have produced snow. It's bitter out there. On my drive from Glenfield to Takapuna I had small hailstones smashing all over my windscreen for half the drive, torrential rain and lots of surface water for the other half.

No hail here and only light rain all morning, sitting on 7.3
* little or no wind apart from a very light squall from a passing shower

Rain just about to start here. Looks like it will last a while too. Wonder how much snow pirongia will have after this rain. Could get 5-10mm from this blob of rain alone.

MetService now has North Shore on 5.9 degrees with a "feels like" temp of 1. Starting to wish I'd set the timer on the heat pump to fire up before I got home tonight...

Re: Thunder, hail and gales for parts of the North Island 28 May
I just had a look at Pirongia. No obvious snow but there could be some at the very top which is still covered in cloud. What is strange is having condensation on the windows here in the office, I've never seen that before as it's a fully air conditioned space.

wind slowly increasing here now
temperature has risen too, as we are in between a couple of chain showers
up to 10C here at the moment
