Doesn't get much colder than this in Auckland. Temperature has risen to 9.4C here now but it's getting windier. Hasn't reached the 10C mark here since 6am.

Yes, wintry in the winterless North, more hail here just now. Northland catching the thunder.
I see Greylynn is over 230mm now for May

Albeit short lived it was great to hear the sound of thunder, my 12 y/o son was pelted by stinging small hail that made him run home fast. I had a nice hot milo ready for him and that made him happy.

Re: Thunder, hail and gales for parts of the North Island 28 May
if I recall correctly, the 3pm temperature for Auckland as given on TV around June 21/22, 1976, was 3 degrees. That followed a very cold outbreak with significant snowfall in mid-Canterbury around the 20th. Anything's possible!David wrote:Doesn't get much colder than this in Auckland.......

Stuff has a video interview with one of the Port Waikato residents who lost part of their roof to that suspected tornado this morn. Apparently it actually hit at about about 6am, but they didn't call the Fire Service until 7am because they 'didn't want to wake them'.

Also check out the pic of a Mission Bay Norfolk Pine struck by lightning at about 8.30am.

More showers with tiny hail mixed in now. You know it's cold when the weather station has a snowflake as the forecast icon haha

A friend posted on facebook a couple of pics of a car that had been struck by lightning - a rear window totally crazed and what looks like a hole at the edge of the glass where it meets the frame. I'll see if I can get permission from him to post a copy here

Looks like there is still quite a bit more rain to come for western suburbs, showers have mostly cleared here as the flow has gone more southerly

Just looked at the timelapse webcam at the Rotorua gondola - after a band of late afternoon showers, Mt Tarawera had a good coating of snow. (quite well down - not just the summit area)I just had a look at Pirongia. No obvious snow but there could be some at the very top which is still covered in cloud.
