Mind you i find to hard to believe that Darfield hasn't gone under -2 deg when you compare to the lows Methven has had so far,and its about the same height 319m asl

Agreed - going by Wunderground PWS it looks like Darfield has a milder micro-climate. Its two stations are sitting on 8C with most others across the Plains between -2C and 2C !

Its +8 there because the NW has been blowing since 1.00am

Cold air is heavy and will fall down hill,a good example of this is along the Pegasus bay coast you get lower temps within a few 100 m of the beach than further higher up inland where there is often a very light breeze drifting towards the coast,an extreme example, north Amberley gets a very cold wind falling out of the Waipara valley,this wind can at times can blow as much as 30+kmp.

This happens in Reefton. a light breeze is almost always blowing down the Inangahua River, through the narrow gorge. Doesn't get across to this side of town.
Not sure if it's caused by the river, the topography, or a combination.

Yes but only there and at a station just east of Oxford where Oxford itself is calm. They must be just the right distance from the mountains for the NW wave to reach the ground... or, the NW is funelling down the Waimak from Staircase.

Could do with more stations to see what's happening.

Yes when the NW air stream starts to effect the South Island like it is this morning its the three gorges( Rakaia, Waimakariri and the Rangitata) it get the wind for a start,this wind can funnel out onto the plains a fair way

The calculated mean minima for Darfield EWS for 1981-2010 show slightly higher values for winter months than at Ch'ch Aero (but lower than Ch'ch city), and slightly lower minima in summer, with the annual average about the same.

There's a reading of -11.8C cited in the stats. report for June 2012 for Darfield 2 EWS/Raws, perhaps suspect.

Seemed to be frostier towards Ashburton.

Thanks everyone for their explanations on why the minima here is higher then the airport, in a way it will be good to get some lower minimums when I move to West Melton at the end of the year!!

This month looks to be finishing with a mean temperature 1.3 degrees warmer than June last year for here. Forecasted overnight low tonight was 2 degrees but its already -0.5degrees at the airport.

Same here - my average for June over the last 12 years is 10 days. A mild first half of the month and cold second half resulted in an average temp of 7.1°C which is 0.5°C higher than my "long" term average.

Of course, the outstanding feature was the rain with 198.4mm recorded over 16 days and the bulk of it between the 16th and 21st.

The day was not windy at all but we did have some intense convection cross Auckland early morning and I'm curious as to whether it was a convective wind event (tornado or microburst). There were no damage reports. 120km/h would be the strongest gust recorded at the site since it began recording in 1971. But can we have confidence that the data is correct?

Yes, I did wonder about that, but it still seems more likely to be an error IMHO.

The Mangere site, located at the old waste-water treatment plant, apparently recorded that 120 km/h SSE gust between noon and 1pm, although 10-minute ENE mean-winds were down to about 3 km/h by that time. Even its E'ly gust of 41 km/h in the hour before that looks a little suspicious, although they were up around that speed much earlier in the morn. Heavy downpours ensued around 5am, then just light rain until about 10am. Temps were also consistently around 12C in that hour to 1pm and the sun didn't make its brief appearance until after about 2pm.
