Re: Thunder risk for North Island for week starting June 17th
I just saw 2 flashes to the west, thunder still fairly quiet out this way
Re: Polar Blast 19th to 21st June - Reports/Discussion
Getting very good views of the lightning here and another hail shower now. So far mainly distant lightning with 3 overhead lightning strikes across the sky

Re: Thunder risk for North Island for week starting June 17th
Pretty decent cell just passed overhead here in Henderson Valley- lightning (observed good cloud-to-cloud) every one and a half minutes tops, passed more or less right over us, accompanied by torrential rain and hail. Looks to be heading towards Blockhouse Bay / Mt Roskill way?

Getting a pretty good squall in West Auckland, close lightning and classic cold air thunder, hail belting down. I was watching it from upstairs for a bit, still a bit blinded from the lightning!

Thunder risk for North Island for week starting June 17th
Loud thunder audible in Glenfield, saw a couple of very bright flashes to my South. Seems to have calmed a bit now, was very active about 10 minutes ago.

Good Thunderstorm conditions for Auckland tonight, less so for more inland locations.
Auckland does very well in these types of setups, enjoy the display while it lasts

Wow, that was fun.. also one of the longest lightning flashes I've seen across the sky here, may have hit skytower as well? and now the road is white with hail drifts piled up everywhere!

Still firing just east-south-east of here- last clap was a beauty! TV reception being lost intermittently (we feed off the Waitakeres). More hail just now, here we go again!

Re: Thunder risk for North Island for week starting June 17th
Just went for a little thunder chase in Kelston , New Lynn, Greenbay and Titirangi areas. some nice lightning out there and some loud crackles too.
Lots of rain mixed with some hail.
Unable to take any good stills of the video.
Seems to have died by around 21:40 ish.
Blitzortung marks have gone from white to yellow now.
My lightning detector worked well.

Re: Thunder risk for North Island for week starting June 17th
The last time I saw hail in such quantities in Howick was years ago. I do not know why we miss most of it in Howick, any clues Just some moderate rain with the second cell (there was a big thunder clap though about 5mins ago)NZstorm wrote:More thunder lightning just now.

Yeah, Herald reports 12 houses damaged by trees hit by lightning at Stanmore Bay. Also a person injured at Pt England (Glen Innes) after lightning knocked a tree over into two houses there.ricky wrote:Reports of damage to powerlines and quite a few houses from lightning on the Whangaparaoa peninsular

Re: Thunder risk for North Island for week starting June 17th
Yes, had some pretty fantastic flashes around here just to my west...and when I say just, I mean a km or so! It was very odd thunder though. One blinding flash was followed 2-3 seconds later by a roaring type thunder, like a descending tonal sound...sort of like a jet engine. It's hard to describe. Another flash was followed one second later by the thunder, only it was "quiet" thunder, muffled kind of. You would have expected it to be very loud. Very very odd storm...RODALCO wrote:Just went for a little thunder chase in Kelston , New Lynn, Greenbay and Titirangi areas. some nice lightning out there and some loud crackles too.

Anyway, intermittent showers here since, with the occasional rumble to my south, over the warmer Manukau harbour I suspect. Looks as though that south westerly will hit shortly with a lot of rain for Auckland.

Second snow on Mt Pirongia in 4 weeks and this one played nice to photograph. Cleared at the right time this morning.
