I heard on the radio that a lot of the sheep in the inland South Island are Merino and can survive in the snow.joe99 wrote:Yeah great snow, what about all the dead sheep ?

You will find there's been very little stock loses with this event mainly because of the reasonably accurate forecasting this time round compared to the 92 storms where cockies were able to have them closer to get feed to them, also today's tractor technology is a better

No unfortunately thats a misconception about Merino's ,they would the softest of all the breeds,as soon as the going gets tough they start sulking and go down hill, Perendales do better in the high country,i found when i did snow raking in 92 the Perendale would gather in groups and walk in circles tramping the snow down, Merino's just sit down by themselves and get coveredNZstorm wrote:I heard on the radio that a lot of the sheep in the inland South Island are Merino and can survive in the snow.joe99 wrote:Yeah great snow, what about all the dead sheep ?

Some stock affected:

Drove up to Arthur's Pass today, 300km return trip. Bloody cold up there but the views were worth the drive!

That 2nd one is awesome, how does the edge of the snow slab curve but not break off under the force of gravity? Must be really compact snow...spwill wrote:Did a drive today from Mosgiel to Naseby , thick snow cover most of the way. Locals in Naseby reckon it is the heaviest fall of snow in that town since 1936.
A few photos

The snow up Porters, Lake Lyndon and Cave stream (places I stopped at) was very powdery. Went for a walk in 50cm deep stuff but as we drove saw snow as deep as the fence posts, at a guess 1m deep.

Drove out to near Lake Coleridge today. Started seeing snow in shaded spots from about 250m asl and by 350m it was covering large areas in the sun. Stopped on Algidus Rd at the junction with the road between the intake and village (530m asl) where it was 20-30cm deep and in drifts to 50cm. The sump guard was planing the snow between the tyre tracks !

It is truly beautiful at present: snow coating the foothills, and the huge and white moon floating over Mt Peel this morning.

I think for the township of Tekapo this fall of snow is the biggest since 1973 or perhaps 1967 however for the Canterbury region the 2006 snowfall was a much bigger event.
Locals at Clarks Junction reckon the fall there was the biggest seen in the area.

Which is saying something as Clark's Junction gets a lot of heavy snow. Though the 1930's event would have been bigger for sure.spwill wrote:I think for the township of Tekapo this fall of snow is the biggest since 1973 or perhaps 1967 however for the Canterbury region the 2006 snowfall was a much bigger event.

Great photo's guys! The Tekapo and Nasby ones are mint due to snow depth of course
I took a few up the back here but a snow photo is a snow photo I spose. Not sure if I have anything interesting to top the above but here you go.
