Waddington July stats:
Average max: 13.6C
Average min: 3.9C
Lowest max: 3.6C on 14/7
Lowest min: -4C on 12/7
Hottest day: 21.6C on 5/7
There was also 7 days above 17C. Truly remarkable stats AT LEAST 3C over the long term max. Will be interesting to see what Christchurch airports stats will be for July, will definately be record breaking, but by how much?

Re: General July Weather
Yes, must be some new July temperature records for the South Island, a lack of cold flow but plenty of NW flow, mild air mass/foehn affect.
Temperatures here have been near normal with rainfall well below average.

Yes,starts to make you wonder if there will be any nasty cold weather left this winter,to think yesterday was the coolest max temp for three weeks on 14deg while it was 16deg todayBradley wrote:Nothing on the way for at least 10 days either mate. Scary stuff.

Re: General July Weather
Interesting. Today was our coldest day for a while, didnt make it above 10deg here, once the fog cleared late morning the high cloud was too thick to allow any sun through, and just a light drift off the sea.

Re: General July Weather
Yeah, same here Tony. a light westerly came through around mid-afternoon, but apart from that not much wind at all. The dew remained on the grass for all day and you could see the tracks of people walking across the grass.TonyT wrote:Interesting. Yeah looks like it?Bradley wrote:Nothing on the way for at least 10 days either mate. Scary stuff.
Makes me wonder, with this Climate change thing, whether we will get this years winter in the summer and possibly next years summer will occur next winter?
Just my theory?

Re: General July Weather
Looks like a possible something around 14-16th Aug. A long way away I know but is the first time in about a month that something has at least popped up on the maps. Bet the skifields are real happy with that large dump otherwise they would be in dire staitsNZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote:Yeah looks like it?Bradley wrote:Nothing on the way for at least 10 days either mate. Re: General July Weather
Some good totals of sunshine for July. Kelburn (with estimates for 3 days) had its 7th sunniest with 143 hours, though far short of the record 182 hrs in 2000. A very respectable 140 hrs at Mangere, notwithstanding the complaining from a certain quarter ...

I have a suspicion that Taumarunui pips the central Waikato for the number of fog days.jamie wrote: Is there anyway of finding out the number of hours of fog per year experienced around the country? Im sure Hamilton/waikato would have the most.

Yes if there was somewhere that would, that would have to be the place.Willoughby wrote:I have a suspicion that Taumarunui pips the central Waikato for the number of fog days.jamie wrote: Is there anyway of finding out the number of hours of fog per year experienced around the country? Re: General July Weather
I recall from old climate commentaries/summaries that of the well-established stations, Taumarunui was cited has having easily the highest average number of days of reported fog. I have a Met.Observations booklet for 1986 (!) which cited 139 days for Taumarunui, 93 for Hamilton Aero (but only 28 for Ruakura!?).

Re: General July Weather
I have done quite a few trips in to Taumaranui and been surprised to find it foggy after none over the Kaimais and on the way down there. So I too agree it's got to be a high probability of being the foggiest spot in the Waikato/King Country. I've travelled directly through Tokoroa or come down after overnighting in Hamilton via Te Awamutu, same result.

Re: General July Weather
Here's NIWA's preliminary, 'July 2013 National Climate Summary'
'Fourth Warmest July On Record'
The national mean temp for July was 1.2°C above the 1971-2000 July average, with many sites in Canty and Otago recording their highest ever July mean-temps.
The highest national temp was 21.5C recorded at Wairoa, and the lowest was -8.4C at Arthur’s Pass.
Numerous sites also had near-record-breaking low rainfall for July, particularly the upper half of the North Island (except for the Far North), as well as parts of coastal Manawatu, Nelson-Tasman, south Canterbury, and coastal Otago north of Dunedin.

Re: General July Weather
The outlook says
It was the mild NW flows that caused the warmer temperatures and a lack of cold flows.High average temperatures for July were experienced in the South Island and parts of the North Island due to persistent high pressures over the country, causing settled weather.
