Looking at the Rain radar it seems Mt Hutt is missing most of the showers. Typical SW setup with showers flowing inland north of Ashburton. Only 1 very light shower here today barely enough to wet the Ground.
Yeah but it looks like they will become more widespread for a time overnight there again. Whats the most snow Mt Hutt has ever had as a base I wonder...

Nothing here seems to have gone around us...at least if it doesn't snow tonight I have seen some snow today up on the hills.

Absolutely freezing cold here in Rakaia and it must be freezing outside as I can hear the trains (only heard them on Thursday night when we woke to one heck of a good icy frost on Friday morning). Dead calm outside now after getting hammered in the early hours of this morning with the southerly when it hit. I would say the worst is over for us. Any word on what it's like up Oxford/Darfield way? I have to head up there for work tomorrow. I'll be setting up the rain gauge here when I find where it's been put during our move down here.

Snowykiwi - here in Waddington/Sheffield we've got about 5cm on the ground. Still getting the odd snow showers but nothing significant in the last hour or so. Snow as settliing for a time in Darfield this afternoon, but seems it's nothing much and disappearing. Hope that helps.

I wouldn't say its over for you the showers seem to be tilting if you look at the radar maps, there seems to be showers coming in further back closer to the coast at Oamaru.
Nice heavy ice pellet shower just then decks are white now, brrr 2.3C.

look out talbotm and moorfnz those big showers coming in from offshore will either fizzle out once they hit land or if they keep going the way they are, you guys are going to have a nice wee snow period soon.

just as i thought though.. those beasty showers offshore weakon as they hit land, it is weird because showers that dont look so beefy offshore when they hit land fire up.. not sure what exactly the cause of this is.. interesting.
SO maybe that good snow period for you moorfnz isnt going to happen lol

The radar just lit up with 2 areas of red. Might become interesting in the next few minutes here. But would say snow unlikely, hail more likely.

Quick question why has the GFS been so unpredictable recently. One minute its on then its off then its on. Driving me nuts. and its pretty right up to the day as well. Like i noticed this last night about 1:30am. The GFS maps showed no snow for the higher suburbs of wellington then this morning when i wake it changed and there will be snow to 300 metres. Really odd i wouldnt expect it to change so much when we are so close to the event. Anyone have a reason for this? On another note im now seeing chain showers and stars even the moon poked his head out to say hi.

I ran a bath, because I just love lying in the bath and hearing the hail lashing away on the roof.
Sadly, the timing didn't work out as I checked the radar before I hoped in and only a few pittings of hail was heard whilst I was 'wallowing away'
Of course, when drying myself in front of the fire, a 'lashing' passed overhead.
Oh dear! What bad timing #-o [-X

I must admit theres nothing nicer laying in bed listening to the rain even more so when its sleeting you can hear the big fat drops, then it goes silent \:D/

The models will always have some variability and when it comes to snow, 1C can change the snow level by 200m or more.

This set up was weak as the weather was occurring under the 700mb/3000m level.
Deeper shower clouds are needed to mix the colder air down and lower the freezing level.

Will be a chilly day for Auckland but skies are clear.

The next high coming in at least has milder air so we'll get a quick recovery from the cold.
