I am not surprised to hear that there has been thunder, I just came through the airport area and the roads were white from grapel/sleet and very dark turbulent TCU.
So the showers do have some vigour to them meaning the CB tops must be pushing abit higher now.
Took a drive up to Darfeild it was snowing off and on up there but not settled in the township, yet 5 minutes east there was a slight dusting in Kirwee.
It just shows where is getting that channeling of the showers more.
The runs through at 6pm are something to look for slim chance but if it gets below 0C who knows its already 4.4C here at the moment.

Made a time-lapse video of a hail shower passing through from 2.35pm - total real time was about 30 minutes. Watch in HD and spot the rainbows...

not a bad day on the other side of the hills.
an icy cold S/SE wind that just cut you in half.
no rain but a fair bit of cloud.
reached 12.8°C but felt 5-6°C colder than that. very low dew points and temps likely to plummet tonight if the wind dies down at all.

Is that a another low trying to form just to the south west of auckland on the radar at the moment? Or just the bend in the windflow?

The precip will be reflecting the wind pattern in the upper trough.

Appreciate your photos, mikestormchaser, 'specially your heroic effort at capturing the South Face of the pie-shop ;)
Great pictures
At least you found snow today: here it's just mostly been a mean wind and currently 2.3 degrees.

Nice pics mike. I think i drove past you as i saw someone taking a photo in about the same spot looking back towards town it looked real dark this afternoon. I was heading back from referring a rugby game in rolleston which involved some of the coldest conditions i have ever experienced wearing such little clothing. Temp is down to only 0.4degs now in waddington but we need some decent moisture now as everything that falls is settling now. Come on some good moisture. Must be close to snowing in town now i would think.???

Intermixed Graupel/sleet and the odd flurry here still ice pellets coming down :-) , sediment mush on cars etc.
Maybe some snow soon if this keeps up, interesting the temperature went from 2.7C up to 3.3C prior to the shower now down to 2.5C.

Lot of rain here with showers containing pin-head size hail, with some bits of snow imbedded in the rain.
Not settling, despite the low surface temperatures.

Looking at the Rain radar it seems Mt Hutt is missing most of the showers. Typical SW setup with showers flowing inland north of Ashburton. Only 1 very light shower here today barely enough to wet the Ground.
