Re: General August Weather
I see isolated Thundershowers are occurring now in Western Waikato. Rather surprising

Re: General August Weather
Very cold air at 700mb's/Easterly surge which was pointing to showers today. I did think hail when I looked at the soundings this morn.
But no showers in Central Auckland.

Yes , there was small hail in slow moving heavy showers just south of the Bombay Hills late afternoon between Hampton Downs and Pokeno, isolated thunder/lightning observed.

Nice to see Invercargill being the nation's national high with 19C.

General August Weather
Could get quite cold tonight. Colder than the 5 forecast anyway. Down to 6 already.

Re: General August Weather
Tasman Sea front inbound but doesn't look like it will reach Auckland until early tomorrow.
While the instability has largely dropped out of the front there will still be upto 100j/kg CAPE with the front tonight so a thunderstorm or two not out of the question. More possible top of Northland.
Cold upper air coming into the west of the North Island early Friday with thunder likely in the west.
Friday 6am 500mb temps. Looking cold!

Re: General August Weather
Some rain in Auckland now from the old trough line that had been over the area last day or two. Maybe a bit of a warm front affect with it also as milder air starts to come in.

Re: General August Weather
Interesting that there has been no wintry systems with low level cold air reaching NZ since mid July, a Winter of two halves
An isolated storm showing up in the Hauraki Gulf last hr.

Re: General August Weather
A maximum of only 13C here today due to cloud cover and patchy rain, I think the coolest maximum here since mid July . Min was 10C, dewpoint currently 11C.

Tomorrow Thursday should be a fine day for Auckland, skew t says 17C.
Still more rain to come tonight, 17mm so far. And may get a heavy cb shower with the frontal change.

Re: General August Weather
Yea 15mm here so far. Falling steadily and should peak in intensity tonight with the frontal change. Could get another 15mm I suppose. Which I'm sure will be welcomed.

Re: General August Weather
Yes. I have noticed anticyclones have been intensifying to the SE of us, enhancing the 'warmer' airflows over us.spwill wrote:Interesting that there has been no wintry systems with low level cold air reaching NZ since mid July, a Winter of two halves

Re: General August Weather
32mm fell in Grey Lynn.
Next trough line coming into the west overnight tonight and crosses slowly tomorrow. While not a lot of rain in it the airmass is cold unstable.

Re: General August Weather
Yes, quite a spectacular lightning show in the outer Gulf late last night. Looked to be mostly towards the Kawau area from here (maybe closer), with very audible distant rumbles. Became very active for about an hour from around 10:30pm, and still the odd strike by the time it passed over here. Total of 26mm here since yesterday morn.Tornado Tim wrote:Some embedded lightning activity going on just NE offshore Auckland atm.

Re: General August Weather
Lucky you I was hoping to hear some thunder but nothing heard from here. I recorded 29mm for this rain event.Nev wrote:Yes, quite a spectacular lightning show in the outer Gulf late last night. Re: General August Weather
A heavy heat shower here, there were tiny hailstones for a brief moment as well.
