NIWA spring outlook looks interesting. They suggest a weaker westerly flow this spring and lower pressures in the subtropics.
NIWA say wetter than normal in the east and north of the North Island. Milder over the whole country.
To me a weaker westerly means less rainfall in the west, possibly well below average in the west of the North Island. It also means a cooler spring in the east as the westerly is the seasonal warming influence there. It does mean a very mild spring for Auckland.
Long range forecasting is always speculative so we'll just have to see how it evolves.
