Hi guys, sorry I wasn't really sure where to put this but I know a lot of you are experts in storm photography so I've created a post under photography just asking opinions on what sort of camera I should get for lightning, cloud and moon photography. Thanks for any help you might be able to give. Cheers.

General September Weather

Come back from ausie to gale winds. Up to 77km/h just recently.

I saw 1 cloud in ausie this week and got to 34 on one of the days. Most days up around 30. Very pleasant but rather boring lol.

Looks fine. Haven't had a chance to check it out. Recording rain and temp as to what I'd expect so I think nothing wrong. Thankfully.

Getting quite windy out there atm :)
Man I am annoyed at how Davis Instruments have engineered the Weather Console, I had the console plugged into the mains and had batteries in it to act as a UPS if the power went off.
The batteries went flat and the whole console turned off despite being plugged into a power source....
Another problem is when you have the unit plugged into mains it wont tell you the batteries are flat as it reads the main input voltage.

Very frustrating!

Gusty westerly here too Tim, max gust 52 km/h.

Yup I have had this happen too (a while back); console readout indicated "battery voltage" was fine, but unplug the 5V DC adapter and the whole thing shut off because the batteries were flat. Actually I was just thinking this morning that I should replace the batteries...

General September Weather

Yea nor did I. It's very windy. I'm averaging at least 50km/h for most of the day. Nothing topping 77km yet though. The wind is also slowly swinging around to a more westerly wind. As this happens it should ease off more as it has to travel across more land but we are not really seeing that.

I see winds were over gale-force on Akld's Waitemata Harbour this arvo - typical of westerlies being funnelled down from the upper harbour.

Front coming into the west of the North Island tonight is worth watching, while there doesn't look to be much CAPE on it the air is still cold 500-22C and there is reasonable lift. Lightning strikes always possible.

Tomorrow the upper trough crosses the North Island. Does seem that Gisborne will have a high thunderstorm risk. Also lower risk for the western central North Island as it crosses am into pm.

Enjoyed some great weather on the Sunshine Coast last week, fine, max 26- 30C each day, hope to go back for a stormchase in November.

Will keep an eye on tomorrows trough but the timing is not the best with this system, comes through a bit early in the day to coincide with best heating, eastern BOP/Gisborne might be the place to catch an afternoon storm.

From what I can see on model output its coming in on time for prime DTSH for Mid-eastern areas of the northern central North Island.
Metservice seems to agree also with the following outlook:
Metservice wrote:A low should move away east of the North Island Monday afternoon and evening. An associated upper air cold pool over the North Island should also move slowly east. There is a moderate risk of thunderstorms developing because of afternoon heating over an area east of a line Hawkes Bay to Waikato to Bay of Plenty, as shown on the chart with a low risk over a surrounding area. Any thunderstorms that develop may produce heavy rain with rainfall rates 10-25 mm per hour.

Elsewhere, no thunderstorms or significant convection expected.

We had a disturbed September now looks like a disturbed October about to roll in judging by the 384hr model. No sign of the weaker westerlies NIWA were projecting. The disturbed westerly flow will throw up thunderstorm chances, particularly over the South Island.

You never know, they could sneak up on our side too. But yes the West Coast would tend to get more.

That is a considerable amount more than Hamilton AWS or my station got....

Hamilton AWS got 158.2 while I had 142.8. Shows how Cumuli forms of rain are playing more of a part in rainfall totals now...

Yea its so high that im keen to get a rain gauge and just make sure its right. I have 95% confidence it is correct from watching how the rain fell this month, we definitly got hit more than you. We also have recorded less than you and hamilton just recently. But i just want to be sure. It might slowly be drifting out of calibration.
