Re: General September Weather
Thunder/hail set up maybe on the cards sunday going by GFS metrogram but its nothing major at this stage..
Certainly some signs there that there is abit of instabilty in the air around that time frame.
Something to watch anyway

Re: General September Weather
I see a Mod risk for Auckland and North-land tomorrow afternoon with the trough of low pressure heading in.....
Not so sure about Waikato's risks, seems a bit fickle, will have to see what eventuates tomorrow.

Issued at: 8:06pm Thursday 19 Sep 2013
CHART AMENDED TO RAISE THE RISK OF THUNDERSTORMS FROM WESTLAND TO NORTHWEST NELSON...
During the afternoon, the risk of thunderstorms over Northland and Auckland increases to moderate before decreasing to low again late afternoon. If these thunderstorms occur, they are likely to be accompanied by localised heavy rain with intensities of 10 to 20mm per hour and small hail is also possible.
A low risk of afternoon and evening thunderstorms also exists for Waitomo,Waikato, the Coromandel Peninsula and much of Bay of Plenty. In eastern Bay of Plenty, the low risk of thunderstorms is confined to the evening hours.
The second front mentioned above moves north over the South Island during the afternoon and evening, stalling over the southern North Island at night. With this front a low risk of thunderstorms is posted for Fiordland, but the risk is now elevated to MODERATE in Westland during the afternoon and to HIGH in Buller and northwest Nelson during the afternoon and evening. In these higher risk areas, rainfal rates of 10-25mm/hr are possible.
In the Marlborough Sounds, Kapiti, southern Manawatu and southern Taranaki there is a low risk of thunderstorms in the evening. Due to the slow movement of the front, localised heavy rainfalls are possible, especially about the Kapiti coast..
A trough is expected to approach southern New Zealand in the evening and a low risk of thunderstorms remains for Fiordland during the evening.
Elsewhere, no thunderstorms or significant convection expected.

Could see 24 Deg today out east. Good blow on the cards for Northland on Wed, though I expect it will start to move more SEast. If the high intensifies things could get nasty however.

Re: General September Weather
Lots of lightning & booming thunder here this afternoon. Haven't had any thunderstorms that active here for a long time and it looks like there might be some more storms passing through over the weekend.

Re: General September Weather
Wow what a thunderstorm. It was huge and the lightning show lasted two hours. Saw our last flash of lightning at 7.20 pm. We didn't get any hail but boy did it rain down. The funny thing was there was no wind at all during the storm.

Nice crop of elevated storms. Often get the best lightning with the elevated convection.03Stormchaser wrote:Metservice have said they recorded 2700 strikes in the two hours before 630pm. Interesting to see what there total count will be.

A few rumbles around 4am with embedded IC lightning as a rain band passed through. Sadly not sufficient for me to bother getting up.

Re: General September Weather
My only issue with tomorrow is cloud cover and patchy rain like this morning, however if the temperatures are like they are this morning 15C with light/moderate rain then I guess lack of heating might not be too much of an issue provided winds converge correctly.
Interesting red/purple line over northern Pegasus bay this morning with that rain.

Absolutely hosing down in the central city at the moment and getting heavier. Radar loop is quite interesting!
I see Metservice are going for rain with heavy falls here Wednesday at this stage. Long way out but haven't seen anything really suggesting this in the models..

Can't be bothered. Will do some more tomorrow.
We lost 6 trees, 3 of them big ones, in the "Big Blow" along the back fence of our property.
The skyline looks bit different but never-mind.
