Cold outbreak Snow to low levels Wed - Thur 4 - 5 sep
Looks to be a good system brewing in the southern ocean. At this stage bring snow to low levels. What are your thoughts guys??

Polar blast goes right up the country with a few cm of snow to 200m over the South Island, 400m lower/central North Island.
There is a chance snow level could be 100m in Dunedin.

Sea level snow possible at times.
looks like a very cold snap, but not much moisture there to produce large accumulations

SPECIAL WEATHER ADVISORY FOR SOUTHLAND, OTAGO, CANTERBURY, MARLBOROUGH, WELLINGTON, WAIRARAPA, TAIHAPE, TAUPO
ISSUED BY METSERVICE AT 11:37am Monday 02-Sep-2013
COLD OUTBREAK ON WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY
A vigorous cold front is expected to reach the lower South Island by midnight Tuesday, then move rapidly north over the country during Wednesday. During Wednesday and into early Thursday, cold, strong to gale southerlies spread over the country behind this front, with snow to low levels about southern and eastern parts of the South Island and lower North Island. At this stage, significant snow accumulations are expected to be limited to the ranges and higher level roads of both islands. However, people about Southland, Clutha and Dunedin should expect snow to near sea level during Wednesday. From later on Wednesday until early Thursday, snow is expected to fall to about 200 metres in Canterbury north of about the Rakaia River and southern Marlborough, with sleet or bitterly cold rain to near sea level. Over the North Island, temperatures are expected to become significantly colder during Wednesday afternoon and evening, especially about Wellington, Wairarapa and the central plateau, with snow above 400 metres, and southerly gales about and near Cook Strait. Snow is likely to cause disruption to traffic, especially about the higher level roads of both islands. Farmers are advised that the combination of bitterly cold southerlies, rain and snow, is likely to cause stress to vulnerable stock.

SH1 Desert Road could catch quite a bit of snow late Wednesday into Thursday. Could be 15-20cm.
Looks to be a marginal thunder risk for the west of the North Island tomorrow pm. The last cold event was similar and produced nothing much but this one is at least coming in later in the day when surface heating could contribute. Gisborne also could see isolated thunder/hail.

Works better for thunder here when the upper cold system has more of a Tasman sea track to pick up and pull in moisture.

Re: Cold outbreak Snow to low levels Wed - Thur 4 - 5 sep
looks like sea level snow for southland and otago but not huge amounts, just showers
moderate chance of heavy snow for north canterbury and southern malborough , and more of a higher chance with central plateau in the north, but with the fact it will be at a higher settling level of a few hundred msl
looking at the charts, coldest air will be southland/clutha up the eastern coastline untill it hits towards wellington then central plateau
but most moisture will be directed at north cant and NI central high country
then again, could be a hit and miss scenario
so will be interesting to see what we get up here in Hanmer.

Yes, set up looks very marginal, likely only isolated lightning/small hail. Front will bring in some cold rain mid afternoon.
Roll on spring.

Wind up now. Blown tree onto lines cutting off 176customers towards Lake Ellesmere
How do we get people to trim their vegetation to prevent this every wind storm?

front hit here 30mins ago. heavy rain mixed in with hail and sleet. a gusty SW came up very quickly.
hail has stopped, but still raining.
hopefully it'll pass as quickly as it came.

Currently cloudy 15C here with frontal showers to the southwest, a cooling trend now through the afternoon.
I see the Queenstown cam shows snow has been falling to around 500m, sleet to lake level, very much a wintry scene down there.
