Am reading some scary reports out of Chch tonight. Sounds like some significant damage occurring. Stay safe down there!

Thankfully here in rakaia the wind has eased from what we had. We lost the old tall tv aerial mast and the two aerials that were on that. Power has come back on after three hours. Spectacular lightning over the alps. Can anyone tell me how bad the addington area is please my elderly father lives just down the road from the cbs arena and I'm hearing reports it has lost the roof - can anyone verify the damage in that area please. Thanks

Counted 7 seconds between lightning and thunder just before. Some very long peals of thunder, getting frequent. Raining. The wind has subsided (comparatively).

TV3 has a story about damage to the Westpac Hub in Addington so that might be getting confused with the arena ?

Posting from phone no power since nearly 2 hours ago massive winds worst ive seen cant asses damage too dangerous out there at the moment.
definatly gusts up around 120kmh one gust was huge the pressure standing under shelter would have been higher than 120 easily .

Calm now. 133 kmh peak yesterday cf 172 kmh in Aug 1975.

Wooden access cover to roof space was lifting and dropping in an alarming way ~10pm. Mr13 asked if there was a name for the phobia of being scared of the wind at night. :>

Nearly 20,000 without power now (Canterbury & NW Christchurch).

Also a fire to the west somewhere as there was a red glow in the sky.
Winds have eased since my last post but trees have taken a battering i beti noticex a few branches around not too bad though and theres a car cover wedged come tangled under my car.
Thunder rumbles most of the night a big one around 3am woke me up.

Grabbed some screen shots of the lightning on the TOA network, will post later, very impressive.

Nothing to report from here thus far. Moving two big MDU's today, one from Opotiki to Edgecumbe, the other from Kawerau to Matata, forecast not flash, hoping for the best. Must remember camera, in case.

The chart doesn't capture the event over Otago/Fiordland. VERY impressive over inland Caterbury. The best spillover lightning event for some time.

Interesting to see the pressure dropped more than 6hPa in the 2 hours before the strongest wind gusts last night.

(Power was off for almost a minute just after 10pm so I started shutting the PC down. That's why the graph is smooth up to that time.)

The webcam captured the dust haze as the strong winds were approaching.

Here is my final graph for Christchurch (metservice data) showing the wind burst late last night. Max was 133 kph. Ashburton had a max of 128 kph. Interesting the highest at Metservice's Banks Peninsula site was only 70 kph or so.

Maybe my bad. I just could not figure out how to get the TOA working again until a little before 8 PM last night, and by then everything had moved north.

Not it still would have detected stuff. Stations in NZ picked up the lightning quite well.

Later today I'll check the data from the Boltek detectors up on the mountain and see how those went.
