Things certainly seem to be quietening down pretty rapidly now.

Not here. Lightning, rain 0.6mm/hr and increasing, and gone dark:

11:40 update 2.8mm rain 10 am to 11 am. Now dry and sunny (for a while):

That was a rare one, a NW thunderstorm of sorts. The rain drops are big and its nice and still which is nice. The lightning part of it has terminated all of a sudden though.
Addendum;
Move the canterbury rain radar slider backwards and forwards and you can see that big blob of rain rolling over the mountains.

Timed my walk to look for damage nicely with moderate to heavy rain and a few good rumbles of thunder.

Power went off at our place about 9.30 last night and is still off. Trees across our driveway prevented us getting out till neighbour with larger chainsaw than mine came round. Minor damage to house (flashings loosened and twisted). Fences and ppwerpoles down in Amberley, but power back on to most of the town. Outlying areas still out. Thunderstorm came right overhead about 10am, flashes every 40-60 seconds, but sun coming out now.

The wind broke a big tree branch at the front of our house. Luckily it just missed the phone line otherwise I'd be internet less.

Been for a drive round mid canterbury. At a guess I would put it at 10,000+ trees have have come down. Bigger than 1975 as I thought ;)

I will explain what I mean. I don't think the same strength winds will occur at exactly the same places. But I see similarities that gust's could become very damaging causing similar damage to 1975.
Feedback from staff working throughout Canterbury indicates worse vegetation debri than 1975.

Good forecasting! _b

But an entire couple of plantations came down in 75'? Still worse?

Well from what I have read from 1975, (obviously I wasn't around then) this event at least seems on par if not more damage but widespread out across Canterbury. Christchurch took a much less of a hit last night that it did in 1975 though.

Ive got a couple photos up here: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set ... tif_t=like

Edit: Ive just added a very nice lightning shot to the album from Tinwald, Ashburton

A few snaps of the 38 year old pittosporum that is on a mad lean along the back fence, its quite hard to tell in the photo though.
A corokia took the brunt as you can see in the second shot.
