Im keen to know what the winds are now up to. Gutted there is no power at home. It could easily set a new record for that station. DARN!!!!!!!!

We said the worst would be mid evening, around 9pm - which is was for some, but now it's picked up for others closer to the centre of the low (seems to be northern, western, central city). But we agreed there would be a calm spell - but the centre of the low may not track close enough to suburbia. Air pressure still sinking here.

Yes agree! What are your thoughts on Kaikoura Phil? They are looking to get hammered between about 10am and 3pm tomorrow! And spreading down to Chch at times too?

Now 985.3 in Glenfield, and still on the way down. A big gust just rattled my roofing iron alarmingly.

Best to email WW Josh - I'm totally focused on Auckland and the North Island with Aaron and others looking after the rest of NZ :)

Wind backed northeast now at Auckland airport having been a howling southeaster for much of the evening, just recorded a gust of 47kts! At least the crosswind component has gone now!

Years worth of grass growth that had spread from parks on Cheltenham beach is now gone, devonport sea scout den has had a pounding and has lost lots of the cladding, a very different beast down there now it's easterly. Lucky most boats are on the hard or it would be a mess. Video to follow

Barometer going back up in Glenfield. Wind has obviously changed direction - I can still hear it lashing the trees on the hill but I'm really sheltered from all directions bar S and SE so it's not impacting the house front-on like it was.

A lot of banging coming from the house in front. There's at least 4 adults and 2-3 children crammed into a 3 bedroom bungalow and half their possessions are stored on their (covered) deck. I suspect there will be quite a mess down there in the morning.

CWUweather wrote:I don't know if anyone saw ones news tonight, but they said, obviously from MS, that the worst conditions for Auckland would be around midnight, which is when the centre of the low was predicted to cross, bringing calmer conditions! What are your thoughts on this?
I believe the 30 second clip you're referring to was based on what Civil Defence were advising, and obviously not from MS. However, the low does appear to have crossed Akld during the hour before midnight, with the strongest gusts at most Akld WS's recorded within about hour or two of that, including 104 km/h at Whangaparaoa before 10pm. I see White Island also recorded gusts earlier in the evening of 161 km/h. 8-o

Shouldn't affect Central Otago too much should it?

Not much rain here so far:
0600 – 0800 was less than 0.5mm,
0800-0900 nearly 0.5mm,
0900-1000 2.0mm,
Virtually none since then (occassional light spit).

NZMS rain radar seems to have died over the last couple of hours? :?:

http://www.weatherzone.co.nz/radar/christchurch is interesting - it seems like there is an umbrella over here this morning.

Waikato/BOP radar was playing up too last night, not sure what was causing it. Wind is still coming from the NE/ENE.

Just for peoples reference: I have transitioned Matangi Weather over to the new VPS so once you have the updated DNS record you may see a Maintenance screen.

One thing out of this low, the rain wasnt nearly as much as what was forecasted. Only 10.4mm, most of the moisture was dumped more northwards.
