Re: Deep Subtropical Low - Sept 24-26
Crikey. The 2008 "weather bomb" was one of the few times we've had trees down in my street and power out (luckily I'd already filled a thermos of boiling water so I could heat the baby's bottle). Is it really likely to be that bad? I guess I should go haul the garden furniture somewhere safe tomorrow morning. If it's that serious, I am also surprised there isn't that much in the media. It's buried well down the Herald's main page and couldn't find it at all at the TVNZ news website. I've already warned my 72 year old Mum not to try going out (by bus) on Wednesday. But like someone said, not really a lot of time to get much of a warning out. I hope boat owners are securing their moorings.

Yes Media coverage of this event has been very poor! The major broadcasting networks have been so sucked up in the Americas cup that they are practically leaving this thing boil down until its in our backyard.

It won't be as strong as Canterbury's big blow. The Canterbury N'Wester had a lot more breeze as you got the jet stream reinforcing the wind flow.

And i would imagine too that this low coming will deliver a much more steady wind than N'Wester did,in between the gusts were periods of light wind ..well it was here, dont know about the rest of Canterbury.

Deep Subtropical Low - Sept 24-26
Been a while since I've seen the rain radar fill in the way it is. Suggests a heck of a lot of rain to move it.

The wind is obviously going to intensity really fast - only gusting 17 km/h in Howick at the moment.

Re: Deep Subtropical Low - Sept 24-26
It seems most of the wind is staying out to sea, hasn't gusted past 30 km/h here yet. It's more of a southerly than a SE here so far. The rain had turned moderate now, 8mm total since 9am.Peopled_Diagram wrote:Hardly any wind here at all. Tree's barely moving and very light rain.

Thanks for that link, Nev - looks full of information.
I notice on the Orewa webcam http://www.windsurf.co.nz/windsurf_cam_orewa.asp that the "ruffled zone" at the water's edge looks increasingly turbulent.

Starting to blow some nice gusts from the SE here in the Grey.. far away from the action up there, but not really complaining with sunset lenticulars!
