Thunderstorms South Island 28th Sept
Thunderstorms central SI 28th Sep
MetService map showing a moderate risk on both sides of central South Island within a large low risk area, something to look forward to so far this spring there's been a lot more thunder&lightning here than what we would get normally.

South Island thunderstorm possibility 28th September
Could be some good activity inland Canterbury tomorrow! Metservice has moderate risk for thunderstorms inland and low risk right to the coast from about Oamaru north to Blenheim. What are your thoughts?

Yeah, well Richard has started topic on this.
Could be interesting to see whether thunderstorms develop or we will just get thundery showers or just a showery change...
...but then it could be bugger all

Posts Merge! Yes Richard, you are the winner! Josh please take a moment to check if there already is a thread for an event before starting a new one, it does only take a couple of seconds!

But hang on...young Josh was talking about from oamaru to Marlborough, yet the thread title is Central SI... this is just the sort of annoyance I was referring to the other day03Stormchaser wrote:Posts Merge! Re: Thunderstorm central SI 28th Sep
So maybe Richards title said central, its an easy fix. If you read Richards posts he covers all areas under the risk that Metservice has mention, the same as what Josh has done a number of hours later. Its just a merge of threads of the same event, don't see how this is an annoyance? If you have an issue with this Razor flick me a PM happy to talk about it.Razor wrote:But hang on...young Josh was talking about from oamaru to Marlborough, yet the thread title is Central SI... this is just the sort of annoyance I was referring to the other day03Stormchaser wrote:Posts Merge! Re: Thunderstorms South Island 28th Sept
Back on Topic, Mike, Jase and myself are free to chase. I am sitting on the fence at this stage just were exactly will see storms but any where along the foothills from Mt Peel to Oxford looks ok. Its a big area with a couple major rivers in between so will probably sit somewhere in the middle to give us options over both gorges.

Re: Thunderstorms South Island 28th Sept
TBH we will see better storm days this spring/summer so I wouldn't be to concerned if I missed today. Cloud cover and the pre-fontal NW are key factors to take into accounts today.

Quite often the saying goes "Why does the weather always have to come first in this house?" when things happen or are likely to happen, weather-wise.

I think you will be safe in Kaikoura today, Richard
Very peaceful and mild here with high cloud and a light westerly.

Yes, well, nothing much really happened, bit of fizzer, conditions not really looking all that crucial for thunderstorm development despite development to the north in the afternoon.Richard wrote:Doesnt sound like i missed much while i was away, only 4mm in the gauge
The warnings were there, and good on them, but you must remember, it is only risk or possibility that an event like this will happen.

Aaron, Jase and Mike
Chased around Mid Canterbury today with Jase and Mikey, met Aaron on the road. Witnessed hail, heavy rain, gust front and a couple strikes. Overall it wasn't all that exciting, but still good to notch up the first chase of the year.

Whales Mouth. Small hail overtook us here as we drove off to get ahead of it again, near Mayfield
