Re: General October Weather
Yes, looks like an active system coming in by the weekend. There looks to be the risk of thunder/damaging gusts/isolated tornadoes on the front late Friday over the west and north of the North Island. Have to keep an eye on it but upper levels not unduly cold Friday.
Saturday colder upper levels with thunder possible.

Well they have NW 45 knots in the Auckland VHF warning, I thought that meant you'll get around 55 knots at your placeManukau heads obs wrote:nothing in the marine forecast to suggest anything out of the ordinary for here for this time of year?

Re: General October Weather
yeah, but thats normal for this time of year
we had gusts to 50 knots just yesterday
I see there is a watch for gales/severe gales
so the marine forecast might be revised up yet
saturday might be windy?

Better with the highs far enough north than them just riding in the tasman, thus the westerlies than SW,been doing a good job cleaning the roof.

Re: General October Weather
Yes, I prefer the disturbed westerly pattern to the antycyclonic southwesterly pattern this time of year.
The Southern Annular Mode has been negative since late August which I guess is helping contribute to this disturbed westerly pattern.
Tomorrow looks on the humid side over the upper North Island, dewpoints around 15C. Good moisture ahead of tomorrow evenings front.

Re: General October Weather
Similar to here. Constant rain that is really quite soaking at times. Hopefully it clears to enhance t-storm chances thisafternoon.Manukau heads obs wrote:no brightening up here...low cloud on the hills and spotty rain

Re: General October Weather
This tree was quite a local landmark and protected. Came down in last night's storm. Seems that despite looking healthy enough had a bad dose of rot in its mid section. It is a Bunya bunya, native of Queensland.

I have my weather station data which is just north of there by a few km, could outline what squall had caused it.
I have a sneak suspicion it was the one that came around 11.24 PM. got a SFC gust up to 64.8km/hr, I heard quite bit of objects moving around outside when it hit.

Re: General October Weather
Yes, 1B in Cambridge. ValMai House. Came across it early Sat afternoon so assume it must have come down Friday night. I'm on the opposite side of town but observed the peak of the winds about the time you meantion - got 30m+ Oak and Plane trees very near my place, always been a slight worry what would happen if one came down. Someone in that street would have heard exactly when it came down... it might be in the local paper this week. It should have coped with a 60-70km/hr gust just fine if it was healthy but it obviously had a rotten section.

Re: General October Weather
Nice crop of elevated storms out in the mid Tasman on a warm front. Some warm air coming off Aussie with Sydney topping 35C in last 2 days. Yesterday was their third hottest October day on record with 37C.

Re: General October Weather
I think you'll find it was Thursday that Sydney's Ob Hill recorded its 3rd hottest Oct temp of 37.3C (airport got to 37.8C). And today Ob Hill just tipped 35C for the 2nd time this month (airport 36.2C).NZstorm wrote:Some warm air coming off Aussie with Sydney topping 35C in last 2 days. Thanks Nev.
Looks like another hail set up over the South island tomorrow but not as severe as Sunday.
The upper trough crosses the North Island but is uneventful.
