Didn't look that sort of weather judging by the conditions here today.

A mate in Kurow had his vege garden trashed by a hailstorm yesterday. Looked pretty active late afternoon from there and out across the Hunter Hills to south of Timaru

Re: General October Weather
GFS was pinpointing north Otago for some convection. Its been an unusually early start to the summer convective season in Otago. This is more typical of December. Not sure what an early start indicates for the summer.
In the meantime the convection is shutting down over the North Island as we transition into summer. Having said that the weak cold front that crosses the North Island on Sunday afternoon might generate something of interest given its timing.

Auckland could get its warmest day of the spring today given wind flow is more w/nw.
Looking like freash snow for the South Island ranges this weekend. Queenstown may catch some flurries Sunday.

One of the colder upper level systems of the year, yes, looks wintry for the likes of Qtwn.
The Auckland to Russell yacht race leaves Ak tomorrow at 10am, gusty conditions might make the start interesting, 160 yachts take part. The tall ships come into the harbour at 1pm.

Any washing that was wetted in this mornings rain should be well winded by now.
PS Anyone know where I can get a copies of "Miles & the weather bureau" please (good reading for likes of this evening)?

Max of 21.4 here. There was too much cloud... I reckon it would have been around 23 if it was a sunny dayNZstorm wrote:Auckland could get its warmest day of the spring today given wind flow is more w/nw.

Still waiting for the September statistical table - and the person nominated for contact has only supplied a phone number!
Another nasty day here, in a 6-week period with far too many of them.

I heard a rumble or two here this morning in Mt Somers John. Overnight Monday (early Tuesday morning) I saw plenty of flashes up the back here, tried to photograph them. This is the best I could do.

Re: General October Weather
21C in October at midnight is warm!
Convection chances over the weekend? The front over the North Island Sunday pm looks a dead duck but could be some weak storm activity over the ranges between New Plymouth and Taupo.
A very cold unstable W to WSW flow over the South Island. Invercargill/Dunedin may a few rumbles thunder tomorrow from a front.

Re: General October Weather
some wild weather here at the moment.
some very gusty winds, especially for Reefton.
At work it's gusting 60-70km/hr I would guess, while in town only recording 30km/hr gusts.
But work is ~500m elevation. it's blowing stuff around, lifting the ceiling tiles etc. nothing particularly exciting, but it's definitely strong for what we usually have.
Certainly one of the windiest days I can remember in the 3 years I've worked here.
also raining, with 15mm recorded so far, but much more to come.

Some big white bubbly clouds have reared up to my south-west over the past couple of hours, but have moved on, it seems.
Currently 23.1 degrees.
