Re: Thunderstorms possible North Island 8 October
M/S were premature in lifting the watch etc
(One news weather at 6:30pm said thunderstorm warnings cancelled...about the time it was all firing up again)
the line is not as lightning active as it was now...

sure looks like a tornado (i.e very isolated damage path)
(despite what weatherwatch and M/S say in that report)

I've seen a couple of strikes. We had a brief heavy shower but missed it to the north and south.

Re: Thunderstorms possible North Island 8 October
well there was good wind shear in the shower lines that come through here
(I was watching a nice rain free base near here about the same time that was showing some rotation/shear)

Yes wind fields were looking pretty decent for nz on the gfs this morning for this afternoon. We had a good rain free base here too but no rotation.

Re: Thunderstorms possible North Island 8 October
what I observed was though scud clouds forming and disapearing in the NNE wind blowing under the rain free base, against the more NW wind in the actual CB itself

Yes, the conditions were what you would expect to see for a tornado. Interesting how Grey Lynn got a 78km/h gust as well.

Re: Thunderstorms possible North Island 8 October
its relatively slow to move east that front...and the top end has been hanging back..
the showers in the NW flow behind it are catching up...
must be a good NNE wind ahead of it
NW wind is gusting to 45 knots here...

Followed the front into north Waikato this evening, could see the odd lightning flash from it. Perhaps I should have stayed with it

Some more info, pics, etc from TVNZ...
'Children 'freak out' as tornado rips through Auckland suburb'
MS also says that waterspouts were spotted in the Waitemata Harbour between Devonport and Auckland City earlier this evening in this report from Stuff…

Re: Thunderstorms possible North Island 8 October
yes, looking like it was indeed a tornado, going on eye witness reports etc
(just because weather watch did not specificly predict possibility of one does not mean they should try and make it look like it was not one?)

My mate was playing golf even tho the club was closed, it passed 20m from him and was spinning and very loud he said
Damage pics

The damage as I saw it, red is lifted roofs, downed power poles and trees, moderate structural dammage, although a garage that I built took a direct hit with only a few broken windows. Damage seemed to be to older houses, still surprises me how the roofs on some houses I've worked on around here are only held down by gravity, nails rusted away... Blue line is just smaller branches and stuff down.

Re: Thunderstorms possible North Island 8 October
I've seen photos and read a couple reports of a waterspout in the Harbour and looking at the damage photo's so far its looking like a very localised weak tornado to me at this stage

Evidence pointing to tornado
Could see nothing from here, rain with very poor visibility came in so quickly.
