it does look as though we could catch a few showers here this afternoon. Will they intensify once they move off the Tasman and onto the warm land?

The central North Island thunderstorms can be seen on the Taupo cam.

That cell to the SW of the lake, at 01:41, looks impressive.

This radar image seems to clearly show a low centre, over about Wanganui, based on the rain band from the SW -> NE.

Unfortunately that isnt where the low is, its just a rain clearing point. If you look at the radar animation and run it through quickly you can see the low pivot point is NNW of New Plymouth. The low however is forecast to be just North of Wanganui around 7 PM or so.

Some 'soft' CB's going up to the South West and South East atm, unlikely lightning producers but still CB's none the less.

Further thunder to the NE of Palmerston North. Looks like we may get some heavy rain within the next 20mins.

This system was a tease for Auckland. Over promised and didn't deliver at all!

There is another system in the models for later next week with thunderstorm possibilities.

Managed a quick pano of the departing line of cb's over Auckland. We got a few minutes of heavy rain from it in Henderson, but that was all.

It was a major fiz of a system. It had so much promise. Central NI (taupo, taihape, etc) did quite well out of this system.
