Today doesn't look like much of a day for Auckland with a SW. Tomorrow and Wednesday look fine with temps 25C.

For some reason my weather data 'flat-lined' about 1am! All fixed now though

I notice Metservice are going for highs of 21 over the next 3 days. I thought that seemed too low.

Yes, the location and timing ties in nicely with Fire Service's incident log-time about 10 minutes later at Egmont Rd, near Katere Rd.

Also remarkably close to where a spout made landfall last August, not to mention numerous other similar incidents over the years. This small rural strip between Waiwhakaiho and Bell Block really does appear to be Taranaki's answer to Tornado Alley (or maybe that should be the 'Bell Block Triangle', lol :-) ).

Unfortunately we have a SW and moist inversion today for Auckland. Same tomorrow.

Upper trough crossing NZ Thursday/Friday. At this stage thunder chances are slight but no doubt the outllook will improve for somewhere in the next few model runs. I'm picking Otago at this stage.

Sunday was looking good for Otago and south Canterbury/mid Canterbury but its backed off abit again :-k .
Some steady convergence showers last night very isolated delivered a further 2.5mm of rain after 18mm on Sunday, and further thick drizzle/light rain showers in parts of the eastern city this morning so some areas are getting a drink in need.

Quite a disturbed upper level pattern in the coming days so storm sets up should eventuate given the time of year.

A robust shortwave crossing the South Island on Friday so watch for storm possibilities in the east on that day.

The airmass over the inland North Island becomes moist/convergence Thursday/Friday and the gfs indicates scattered pm heavy showers/thunder over the ranges.

Have a new weather station in operation now for its first full day today. Looking to have this running online early next year. Seems to be behaving very well indeed! :) Max temp today of 25.6 degrees with 0.6mm of light rain for a time early this morning. Just a light ENE throughout the day with a maximum gust of 21km/h.

Could well be. Early days yet as we've still got a couple of months to go, but the national average temp for the year so far is running at about 0.7C above the 1971-2000 normal. Only 1998 (+0.9C) and 1999 (+0.8C) have been warmer since 'reliable' records began over 100 years ago.
A little update from NIWA that might be of interest…
'2013 a hot year - NIWA' - Radio NZ
Updated at 1:00 pm today

The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research says 2013 will be one of the three hottest years on record.

A principal scientist Brett Mullan said if December is 1.4 degrees above average, 2013 will be the second hottest year on record. If it is two degrees or more above average, it will be the hottest year since records began.

Dr Mullan said 1998 is currently the New Zealand's hottest year on record, with 1999 the second hottest.

A bit of an interesting feature in the weather this morning was an upper level cloud that produced light spotty rain across the region enough to wet the ground for about an hour, unexpected but its been like that the last few days more precipitation falling when theres hardly anything on the weather maps.
Spotted some congestus over the peninsula this afternoon too, some potential chances coming up for most parts of the country soon

Weather looking warmer for Auckland next few days given there is no real SW flow.

UKmet model suggests Auckland's best chance for an afternoon heat shower is Saturday.

I would like to be on the South Island West Coast today with that crop of Tasman storms heading there way!

Yes, heat thunderstorms around lower central North Island and the Dunedin area this afternoon.

More thunderstorms over the central North Island tomorrow and again Saturday. Possibly the risk of an isolated thunderstorm in the Auckland area on Saturday but will depend on the moisture.

Absolutely. My other half snapped the anvil at 33,000 ft, half way between Wellington and Auckland.

Day 2 of possible storms. Eastern Otago to Bay of Plenty. Could be worth a thread if anyone decides to chase.

Worth a mention is some reasonable shear over the South Island today and coming days.

Cloud over the central North Island might limit convection there today however I see skies are starting to clear there now.

Mostly fine and rather humid here today.
